Social Reform and the West. Effects of Social Reform. As Europeans were reforming society, their ideas began to spread west . Soon, many of these ideas reached the United States . Americans began to fight for their freedoms and rights.

  2. Effects of Social Reform As Europeans were reforming society, their ideas began to spread west. Soon, many of these ideas reached the United States. Americans began to fight for their freedoms and rights. Many reformers in the United States brought changes to our society.
  3. Susan B Anthony andElizabeth Cady Stanton Both worked for women’s rights. Susan B Anthony Campaigned to get women’s suffrage (the right to vote)
  4. Elizabeth Cady Stanton Helped Susan B Anthony Helped organize the first Women’s Rights Convention in 1848. Wrote the “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” which included women’s suffrage.
  5. Frederick Douglass Was born a slave. He escaped to a free state and found supporters who purchased his freedom. He published the North Star, an abolitionist (people who wanted to abolish or end slavery) newspaper. He was a speaker and writer who fought for the end of slavery.
  6. Abraham Lincoln Was elected 16thPresident in 1860. The Civil War divided the nation. He was first to declare martial law (military control of the local government. He was the first to suspend the writ of habeas corpus (right to appear in court when charged with a crime). At the end of the Civil War, Lincoln’s Plan – The 10% Plan agreed to allow states to rejoin the Union after 10% of the voters pledged allegiance to the Union.
  7. Emancipation Proclamation Issued by President Lincoln in 1863. Declared slaves free in the seceded states that did not agree to rejoin the Union. Was not accepted by the Confederate States, but as the Union soldiers conquered the Confederate states, the slaves were freed. The Emancipation Proclamation proved to the European nations that the Civil War was being fought over slavery.
  8. Constitutional Amendments Several amendments to the Constitution were made as a result of changes in society. Among these were: 13th Amendment 14th Amendment 15th Amendment 19th Amendment
  9. 13th Amendment Abolished (ended) slavery in the United States.
  10. 14th Amendment Made former slaves citizens of the United States.
  11. 15th Amendment Gave all men the right to vote in state and federal elections regardless of color, race or former condition of servitude.
  12. 19th Amendment Granted women’s suffrage (right to vote).
