Project 8 (Description and Cataloguing) Objectives • Improve access via Libraries Australia (and Trove) to documentary heritage materials, especially unique materials • Identify ways of reducing costs and the time taken to process and catalogue materials For instance, more productive and streamlined ways that are appropriate to the category of material • Review standards required by Trove

Action 1: Catalogue newspapers online Goal Catalogue all Aust. and NZ newspapers in print and microform onto Trove by June 2011 Points We are close to 100% coverage for print titles Not as well advanced for microform Agreed standards developed by ANPLAN
Action 2: Make collection lists searchable through Trove Goal To develop streamlined approaches for making lists that describe the contents of collections, searchable through Trove Points Lead agency – ANL Project underway – funded by NSLA
Action 3: Streamlined methods for describing pictures for online access Goals • To document the different approaches libraries are taking • To assess the pros and cons of each approach • To develop basic bibliographic standards Points Lead agency - SLWA Not yet commenced A lot of interest; potential for big step forward
Action 4: Metadata standards and Trove Goal Review core bibliographic standards required to benefit fully from Trove search and delivery functionality Points Lead agency – NLA Trove data requirements documented These will be reviewed as part of all project 8 actions
Action 5: Improve performance in making manuscript collections accessible Goal To develop a common framework for assessing practice and performance associated with providing access to manuscript collections Points Lead agency – NLA (Marie-Louise Ayres) Timeframe – Feb-Sept 2010 Involves detailed survey of workflows and practices and workshop, possibly with RLG
Action 6: Geographic identification information in records Goal Develop approaches and standards for including geographic identification information in bibliographic records to support geospatial mapping of data Points Lead agency – SLQ Still to be scoped
