Concussions • Our athletes are our top priority • Must take concussions seriously • “When in doubt, sit them out” • Coaches are first line of defense • Parents should speak up as well • Support the athlete • Support each other
Safety First: A True Story (cont.) • A serous injury that was caused by poor sportsmanship • Could’ve been avoided • Don’t let poor sportsmanship ruin a child’s summer • “Be a good story!”
Pitching Commentary • Pitching is key to a team’s success • Players can pitch safely; supervision and instruction are key • Parental awareness and support are needed to responsibly monitor pitching activity and player health • Throwing is like weight lifting, build up capacity over time • Play catch and play “long toss”
Pitching Commentary • When a pitcher’s mechanics start to break down from fatigue, it’s time for that pitcher to rest • Avoid overuse; “trying to do too much too soon” • Warm up to throw, don’t throw to warm up • Ease into throwing early in the spring • Avoid throwing curve balls and sliders until player is physically mature • Do not encourage your player to play through significant pain; cease throwing activity and consult a medical professional
