  1. DataGRID WP4 Installation Task - in progress Jaroslaw Polok CERN IT-PDP-AS & DataGRID WP4

  2. Today: Computer Center • Small to midsize clusters • Diversity of OS: • CERN: Linux, Solaris, AIX, HPUX, IRIX, DUNIX, ... • Loosely coupled installation tools suites: • CERN: AIMS, SUE and ASIS • INFN: ANIS, kickstart, scripts plus manual config • Univ. of. Edinborough: LCFG/updaterpms • .... • Scalability ??

  3. Tomorrow: DataGRID Fabric • (Very) Large Clusters • Few OS variants: • CERN: Linux and Solaris • Integrated installation tools suite • Modular • Scaleable • Automated

  4. First Step: IIS9 • Interim Installation System for Month 9 • Not a prototype • Useable in the context of small testbed cluster • Redhat Linux ONLY • Reuse of existing tools • Based on: • LCFG/updaterpms (+ ASIS?) • VA-Linux VA Sytem Imager • Due for September 2001

  5. Next steps: Architecture Definition DRAFT • Purpose: • Installation and upgrading of OS & software • (Re)Configuration of the system • Maintenance tasks handling • Four subsystems: • Node Management System (NMS) • Software Repository System (SRS) • Software Packages (SP) • Bootstrap Service System (BSS)

  6. Software Packages DRAFT • Three components: • Data • Dependency information • Method classes: • installation/de-installation • configuration/verification • Control methods • States • (un)installed, configured, running

  7. Software Repository System DRAFT • Storage & Maintenance System • Read-only scaleable client interface • Read-write interface: • Administration of software packages: • Inserting, removal, updating • Will interact with WP4 Configuration System • Notification of availability • Prevention of 'accidental' damages

  8. Node Management System DRAFT • SP related operations • Execution mode • Verification mode • Consults WP4 Configuration System • Retrieval of desired configuration • Computing of action sequence needed • Per node and per SP modes of operation • No 'intelligence' involved!

  9. Bootstrap Service System DRAFT • Initial boot of the system through the network • Redhat's kickstart • Solaris installation server • ... • Triggers initial run of NMS • Per node network cfg retrieved from WP4CFG

  10. Constraints DRAFT • Installation system should NOT focus on any OS • It MUST be scaleable up to tens of thousends of nodes • Upper layers will be designed and implemented to be as portable as possible. • Lower layers MAY be OS dependent: • SP data part format • SP installation methods

  11. Architecture overview DRAFT Software maintainers WP4FMS WP4CFG BSS SRS NMS WP4MON
