INTRODUCTION • An extension of the message on the Kingdom of God • The “Sheep and the Goats” parable • Will be reading much Scripture today
Matt 25:31-46 (1) But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He shall sit on the throne of His glory. (32) And all nations shall be gathered before Him. And He shall separate them from one another, as a shepherd divides the sheep from the goats. (33) And indeed He shall set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats off the left. (34) Then the King shall say to those on His right hand, Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Matt 25:31-46 (2) (35) For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in; (36) I was naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me. (37) Then the righteous shall answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, and fed You? Or thirsty, and gave You drink? (38) When did we see You a stranger, and took You in? Or naked, and clothed You? (39) Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and came to You? (40) And the King shall answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you have done it to Me.
Matt 25:31-46 (3) (41) Then He also shall say to those on the left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into everlasting fire prepared for the Devil and his angels. (42) For I was hungry, and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me no drink; (43) I was a stranger and you did not take Me in; I was naked, and you did not clothe Me; I was sick, and in prison, and you did not visit me. (44) Then they will also answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister to You? (45) Then He shall answer them, saying, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me. (46) And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into everlasting life.

The Sheep and the Goats (2) • On what basis are the sheep and goats identified? • Those helping people’s needs, downtrodden, ostracized, persecuted? • Those who help those in need • Those who have mercy, who love their neighbor
The Sheep and the Goats (3) • Questions: • Were the sheep and goats not aware of the need to help and love? (They do) • What did the sheep and goats not realize? • What can you conclude? • God demands us care, love, have mercy for our neighbors are very important, that he would equate doing on to the little one is doing onto Him. • God demands we do onto even the least of the neighbors
James 2:13-20 For he who has shown no mercy shall have judgment without mercy, and mercy exults over judgment. (14) My brothers, what profit is it if a man says he has faith and does not have works? Can faith save him? (15) If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, (16) and if one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, but you do not give them those things which are needful to the body, what good is it? (17) Even so, if it does not have works, faith is dead, being by itself. (18) But someone will say, You have faith, and I have works. Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith from my works. (19) You believe that there is one God, you do well; even the demons believe and tremble. (20) But will you know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Jesus Feeding of Multitudes (1) Mar 6:34-42 And going out Jesus saw a large crowd. And He was moved with compassion toward them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And He began to teach them many things. (35) And it now becoming a late hour, His disciples came to Him and said, This is a deserted place and it is now a late hour. (36) Send them away so that they may go to the surrounding fields and villages and buy loaves for themselves. For they have nothing to eat. (37) He answered and said to them, You give them food to eat. And they said to Him, Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii of loaves and give them to eat? (38) He said to them, How many loaves do you have? Go and see. And when they knew, they said, Five, and two fish. (39) And He commanded them all to recline, group by group, on the green grass. (40) And they reclined group by group, by hundred and by fifty. (41) And taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to Heaven, He blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them. And He divided the two fish to all. (42) And they all ate and were filled.
Feeding of Multitudes (2) Joh 6:24-27 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. (25) And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? (26) Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. (27) Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
Feeding of Multitudes (3) Mat 15:32-38 Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. (33) And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude? (34) And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. (35) And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. (36) And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. (37) And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. (38) And they that did eat were four thousand men, beside women and children.
The Gospel and Mercy • According to Matthew: Jesus’ mercy is the meeting the needs of the people • Deu 15:11 For the poor shall never cease out of the land. Therefore, I command you saying, You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor, and to your needy, in your land. • Rom 14:15 But if your brother is grieved with your food, you no longer walk according to love. Do not with your food destroy him for whom Christ died. • According to Mark and John: Jesus’ mercy is the preaching of the gospel • It is about meeting BOTH physical and spiritual need of people
APPLICATIONS • Know our Obligations • Yes, both the gospel and mercy/charity/meeting needs are important • A reality: Physical needs are endless • Spiritual (salvation), is more important • Physical needs are easier to meet, but must share a component of faith • Beware: • Is about our faith and outgrowth of our faith • It is about our arrogance and hypocrisy
CONCLUSIONS • Have love and mercy in your faith! • Be perfect like the Father • Mat 5:46-48 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? (47) And if you greet your brothers only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax-collectors do so? (48) Therefore be perfect, even as your Father in Heaven is perfect.
