” AQUA-ALTA” – sea level anomalies due to storm surge, cause sea floodings Ten-year distribution of high tides >=110 cm recorded in Venice, from 1872 to 2016. A different color highlights incomplete decades.
Partnership 9 Partners, 7 Associated partners • City of Venice (CoV), Italy • National Research Council-Institute of Marine Sciences (CNR ISMAR), Italy • Agency for environmental protection and energy in Emilia-Romagna (ARPAE), Italy • Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO), Slovenia • Apulia Region, Department of Civil Protection (ARCP), Italy • Regional Council of Durres (RCD), Albania • Regional Union of Municipalities of Epirus (PED Epirus), Greece • Institute of Geosciences, Energy, Water and Environment (IGEWE), Albania • Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), Croatia • aly • Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy • Durres Port Authority, Albania • National Civil Protection Department, Italy • Regional Civil protection Agency in Emilia Romagna, Italy • Regional Agency for Environmental Prevention and Protection of Veneto, Italy • General Directorate of Civil Emergencies, Albania • Slovenian Water Agency, Slovenia
DHMZ - 70 years of activities • National hydro-meteo authority of Croatia • Observations, forecasts/warnings for weather hydro and sea state • Observations : more than 160 years of operative measurements • Marine meteo forecasting center - Split and Rijeka harbours (24/7) • R&D on weather marine hydro and climate • operative meteo HR NWP model , pre-operative wind wave model • Warnings to public, civil protection authorities, marine safety interdisciplinary local HR warnings, coastal events • AMMC ( Adriatic Marine meteo center ) WMO /WIS /WIGOS step 1 - national integration of marine observations (and metadata) and operative products
DHMZ – activities in marine meteorology Marine Meteorological Centre • Activities are based upon Safety of Life at Sea - SOLASConvention. • The weather bulletin is issued regularly four times per day: • warnings • brief synoptic analysis • weather forecast • visibility and sea state • weather reports from the selected stations
DHMZ – activities in marine meteorology Marine Meteorological Centre • 10 m Wind gust field • (12Z 11May 2012 UTC + 36h) • Synoptic chart • Sea surface temperatires http://meteo.hr/index_en.php http://prognoza.hr/nauticari_e.php?id=nauticari
DHMZ motivation to join the I-STORMS • to improve the knowledgeon the sea flood phenomenas in general, and at Adriatic Ionian region ( storm surge andmeteotsunami origins) - to beactive contributor in the development of regional strategy and guidelines related to the early warning systems for severe coastal events • to contribute to applied operative regional actions from R&D to end products for local communities - to meet and connect regional colleagues, experts and users
Newer meteotsunami cases(origin prof. Orlić, Geofizički zavod PMF Zagreb) 27/6/2003. 22/8/2007. 15/8/2008. 19/2/2010.
Storm surges in Croatia – case Rovinj 10th Feb 2016 • Geographical factors • Intensive atm. synoptic and mesoscale systems • Gale force wind over the open sea area (28 m/s) • Rough sea state significant wave height 2.5 - 4 m • Sea level anomaly 70 cm
I-STORMS project goals • Establishment of I-STORMS networks, composed of national partners, who will participate in the development and implementation of I-STORMS tools, and the development and implementation of national practices, early warning procedures and civil protection. • Creating an ADRION Sea Storm Atlas, which will include information on past storms, descriptions of the damage and an overview of existing intervention procedures on the threats in the project partners' countries. • An inventory of operational met-ocean observations and forecasting infrastructure for the ADRION domain (metadata with formats, data policy) • Development of a common information platform for early warning of the possibility of flooding of the sea. • Establish a common ADRION strategy for more effective response, management and protection of coastal areas • Display and dissemination of project results through public presentations, printed materials and publicly available web and mobile applications.
Croatia - understanding the threat • Croatian wathers authorities • Sea flooding risk charts • EU Directive2007/60/EC • On assessment and management of flood risks • /EC on the I-STORMS survey Map of the observed sea flooding at Croatian coast - harbors, marines -caused by: storm surges, high waves, meteo-tsunami
I-STORMS Web Integrated System (IWS) • Design and implementation of a • common earyl warning system:1. Common sharing system of met-ocean observations and numerical met-ocean forecasting models2. Transnational Multi-model Ensemble (TMES) composed by availablesea state forecasts3. Collaborative Geoportal to access both observations and TMESproducts
