E3 Multi-sentence Paragraph Method • The E3 paragraph method is an effective strategy for learning how to write a multi-sentence paragraph. • The E3 paragraph usually consists of eight sentences in a specific order: • Topic Sentence–TS • Evidence Sentence–E1 • Explanation Sentence–E2 • Elaboration Sentence–E3 • Evidence Sentence–E1 • Explanation Sentence–E2 • Elaboration Sentence–E3 • Concluding Sentence-CS

  3. Important Strategies to Remember about E3 Writing • Do not write in the first person Do not use I. • Do not write in second person Do not use you. • Always write in present tense

  4. TOPIC SENTENCE • A Topic Sentence (TS) is the top piece of bread in the sandwich. • TS = first sentence of the paragraph. It shows the main idea. • Usually a mildly controversial statement–something that must be proved. It can be as brief as 3 words!

  5. Step 1: Evidence = E1 CONCRETE DETAILS • Concrete Details (CD) are the meat on the sandwich • CDs = facts, quotes, examples, etc. from the text. • CDs can’t be argued with—a CD is evidence that supports your point!

  6. Step 2: Explanation = E2 Why Evidence is Important • Explanations (E2) are the condiments on the sandwich. • E2s = explain why facts, quotes, examples, are important. • E2s = add to the flavor.

Step 3: Elaboration = E3 What the evidence proves • E3 Sentences are the “extras” on the sandwich: the tomato, cheese, lettuce,—They make it delicious! • E3s = analysis, interpretation, explanation, or insight into the text. • E3s are about your concrete detail and answer the questions such as “Why is this important?” “What is the purpose?” and “What does this prove?”

  8. E1+ E2+ E3 = Chunking • CHUNKING A combination of E1+ E2 + E3s is called a “chunk.” In English, we will mostly use a combination (or “ratio”) of 1:2. That is, for every 1E1, write at least 1E2 and 1 E3.

  9. CONCLUDING SENTENCE • A concluding sentence (CS) is the bottom piece of bread on the sandwich • A CS wraps up the paragraph. • It rephrases the main idea and transitions into your next paragraph.
