  1. Hello! Welcome to Project STIRTM Ohio Tell me, I’ll forget Show me, I may remember But involve me and I’ll understand. -Chinese Proverb This training session is presented by the Ohio Self Determination Association (OSDA) and partially funded by the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council .

Role of Ally / Support Person • Each participant is here with a support person, who has an important role! • Partner with the participant so you both complete and, TOGETHER, take part in all activities. • Engage in small group work and assist by reading, writing and encouraging the participant to speak up. • Be an active partner in all training activities so you can assist the person you are with to be a local leader in advocacy when the training ends. • Support the participant to attend future STIRTM network meetings, to speak up and be active as a self advocate and as part of advocacy efforts.

Speaking Up for Yourself! • Speaking up means saying what you need or want • It also means telling your ideas and feelings • Some people I know who speak up are …… • Activity #1 - Name some people you know who speak up for themselves and give examples. • Activity #2 - Now, think of a time you spoke up!

  30. Self-Advocacy means you • Speak up for yourself • Ask for what you need and want • Negotiate – you agree to some of what others want so you can have some of what you want. • Know your rights and responsibilities • Know when to ask for more information that is helpful to you

  32. Being a Leader • To be a good leader, a person must first learn to advocate or speak up for themselves. • When you are good at advocating for yourself, you can work better with others. • When you are a leader, you work with others to change things to be better.

  35. Know Your Feelings! • We tell others our feelings and send a message to others in many ways: • the look on your face • body language – how you sit or stand • tone of voice • maybe even how we dress • NOT just what we say!

Knowing Your Feelings Knowing your feelings can help you become a better friend, worker, advocate and leader.. • You can tell the difference between your feelings, thoughts, and actions. • You care about the feelings of others and their actions. • How you feel helps you decide about things. When you have strong feelings, you can still treat others with respect and do your job!
