Session outlines ‘The Connected School’ - Graham Thomson The educationalist Richard Elmore argues that ‘Privacy of practice produces isolation; isolation is the enemy of improvement.’ By breaking down this isolation, ‘The Connected School’ is more able to realise the potential of A Curriculum for Excellence, working closely with its parents and community and creating productive partnerships with a range of institutions, agencies and individuals. By developing rich networks, The Connected School creates a capacity for effectively dealing with change that helps develop the ambition of The Journey to Excellence, which seeks staff to be ‘…innovative in their approaches to learning, teaching and meeting needs.’ This seminar will: •explore the importance of creating The Connected School in the context of ‘Building the Curriculum 3’ and ‘A Curriculum for Excellence’, •outline approaches to building effective partnerships and networks within and beyond the community, •highlight examples of successful ‘connected’ practice, •reflect on the educational gains for pupils of developing the role of parents and carers, •support creative and innovative leadership approaches to developing the Connected School in the context of ‘The Journey to Excellence.’
Leadership - Kate Coutts A brief introduction to the different aspects of the leadership development programme in Shetland which has extended to Orkney. This presentation gives a background to each of the 4 aspects of the programme and demonstrates some of the exercises involved. The final section of the workshop deals with Metasaga, a tool developed in Shetland, which is now being used to encourage pupil leadership in all 6 of Orkney’s secondary departments. Glowing in Bernera - Kirsteen MacLean and pupils This session will show the impact of Glow in the classroom. The pupils will demonstrate how they use Glow in variety of settings. Self Evaluation on the Journey to Excellence - Terry Carr "The session will consist of a presentation followed by a workshop. They will focus on using the recently published HMIE guides to self-evaluation. Reference will also be made to presenting a school's self-evaluation well to an inspection team" Next Steps and the Way Forward - David Cameron “This session will do exactly what it says “on the tin”. I will try to set out some next steps that we can take now, implementing Curriculum for Excellence. It is intended to be reasonably practical and, I hope, helpful”
