  4. Amadas and Barlowe Expedition • Prominent people: • Philip amadas • Arthur Barlowe • Manteo and Wanchese- Natives taken back to England • Mission: Exploratory expedition to study and report on North Carolina Region to the Queen

Amadas and Barlowe Expedition • Events: • Arrived on North East coast of North Carolina an became first English to step foot in region • Claimed 600 miles north and south for Queen Elizabeth • Explored land and met native people • Accomplishments: • Gathered information and collected plants and animal life to take back • Met friendlily natives. • Positive report creating enthusiasm in England to start colonies

  6. Ralph Lane Colony • Prominent People: • Ralph Lane- commander • Richard Greenville • Simon Fernandes • Thomas Harriot- scientist • John White • Mission-Set up a lasting settlement on Roanoke Island

Ralph Lane colony • Events: • 107 men landed and began to explore, map, and draw out area • Greenville went back to England to get food but didn’t return by winter • Food was low with no crops and natives not sharing people are starved • Bad leadership led to problems with natives • Accomplishments: • New crops like tobbaco, corn and potatoes • Drawings and maps of area

  8. John White colony • Prominent people: • John White- Leader • Simon Fernandez- pilot • George Howe- Killed by natives • Manteo- Returned as translator • Virginia Dare- 1st English baby born in new world • Mission: • to set up a lasting settlement in new world

John White Colony • Events: • Arrived and found bones of one man from Ralph lane colony • George Howe killed by natives • Virginia Dare born • When food was low, white returned to England for supplies. England was at war with Spain so he couldn’t return for 3 years. When he returned nothing was left but a word (Croatoan) was carved on tree • Believed that colonists went with Manteo’s people but they were never heard from again • Accomplishments: • Failure but ultimately lead to 1st permanent colony in North America (Jamestown)
