Stop periodically/routinely & let the kids think & write! Lecture or large group discussion: every 10-12 minutes. Video: 15-20 minutes or after a key scene. Efficient & powerful. • 3-5 students (4 is ideal). • Short notes to each other about a rich, complex topic assigned by the teacher. • Jot, pass, read, & add. • All students writing…no off-task time. • 2 rules: 1) Use all the time for writing & 2) Don’t talk when passing. Write Around

Tennessee helped build it. • Grades 3-11, begin 2014-2015, Achievement tests RLA & MATH=PARCC. Science & Soc Studies remain TCAP. • Allows comparison to other states. • Two separate windows/components—PBA Feb or Mar & End of Year Apr or May • Students’ final scores combines the two components. ELA/Literacy = 3 parts, Math = 2 parts. OMS will be Field Testing some parts of PARCC in March 2014.
6. 60% of ELA/Lit will involve writing. • 60+% of Math will be on “major work of grade.” • Includes many different type questions. • Hand-scored questions on Constructed Response & Writing responses. • IEP accommodations will support PARCC. • Administered ONLINE-testing cycled through students. • No grammar in isolation— assessed in WRITING. OMS & PARCC
