Vision Statement • “Atlantic Canada Social Studies Curriculum will enable and encourage students to examine issues, respond critically and creatively, and make informed decisions as individuals and as citizens of Canada and of increasingly interdependent world.”
Essential Graduation Learnings EGLS • Time, Continuity and Change • Interdependence • Culture and Diversity • People, Places and Environment • Personal Development • Problem Solving • Technological Competence • Communication; Aesthetic Expression
Social Studies – Artist Expression in Canada • Emily Carr’s stamp on Canada • Research her life and civic contributions to Canada – using past to present to reflect ahead • Involvement with Aboriginal community and landscape/nature – shaping of our Country
Why use technology to research and locate information? • Various sources • Issues are summarized • Very visual • Ease of research – all have same access • Holds attention as it is colorful and interactive
Importance of Text • Class text – see pg. 180 “Despite the attention paid to other components of hypermedia, text remains one of the most powerful ways to communicate ideas. Text can be generated as a multimedia project develops or can be imported from word processing files.”
According to the textbook, what is the name for this kind of problem-based learning? • Social action projects – see page 240 • Constructivism Approach • Hands on Learning • Pages of interest for further follow up – see pages 41 (Social Activism Theory), 342 (Adapting for Special Needs Suggestions/sites), 334 (The National Council for Social Studies defined and themes 1-10 described “study of humanities to promote civic competencies”)
Why email only to teacher? • Safety so emails come into teacher • Teacher can monitor what is being shared • Practice back and forth
Assessment • Discuss this with students prior • Give them 3 minutes to write down as many single words they can use to describe their own thoughts on Emily Carr and her contributions
Evaluation- see Rubric • http://wps.prenhall.com/wps/media/objects/2448/2507611/Volume_medialib/IAF13.PDF
Finished Product • Educators often work from finished product back so sample could be shown. Sample is for model and also for the educator who needs to practice!
