Single Line Diagram CONFIGURATION
On-Line Double Conversion Topologythe only accepted topology for critical applications Double Conversion Advantages • True isolation between the input and output • Independence of the input and output voltages and frequency • No-break transfer to battery or bypass power • Does not rely on the batteries for frequency stabilization On-Line Double Conversion Technology
Fault Tolerant CircuitryManages faults without compromising the UPS • Output faults are relatively common over the life of any electrical system – will your UPS be able to handle them? • Regardless of the overload capacity of the inverter (i.e. 150% or 300%), it’s not enough to handle output faults which range from around 600% to infinite current. • Only the utility has enough power to clear most output faults safely (usually 100 times + the fault clearing current of the UPS module). • The inverter’s fast current limiting response protects it from damage while allowing the utility to safely clear the fault via the robust static bypass switch • regardless of the overload • Other UPS may suffer fatally from output shorts as the inverter may self destruct if it cannot current limit and safely transfer to bypass. Galaxy 3000 with 150% rated fast current limiting inverter and fully rated transfer switch. inverter fault Brand A Brand A with 300% rated inverter and slower transfer switch.
Fault Clearing Sequence Power Flow 1 UPS detects current on inverter exceeds 167% of nominal 2 Inverter shuts down (1/300 of a cycle) avoiding thermal overload 3 Static Transfer Switch opens simultaneously 4 Utility clears fault via fully rated Static Transfer Switch 5 UPS returns to inverter power Load protected throughout sequence Fault Tolerant CircuitryHow fault tolerant circuitry works • Fault tolerant circuitry relies on two critical features • Inverter is fast enough to current limit (switch off) and avoid being overloaded by excessive fault currents • Static transfer switch can sustain enough current to clear the fault without damage
Power Quality Envelope (<1% V) Output Voltage Up to 8 cycles per mS (132 / cycle) DPQ [Digital Power Quality]The heart of MGE’s performance advantage • Output created from hundreds of variable width pulses (Pulse Width Modulation) • Control Loop compares output to a references sine wave and makes adjustments or correction pulses to maintain a “power quality envelope”
DPQ AdvantagesLoad Surge Management Devices with high start-up surges • IT equipment (switch mode power supplies) • Medical imaging equipment • Distribution transformers • Motor loads • Fluorescent Lighting • Step loads or load surges are common in most applications • i.e. starting distribution transformers, starting banks of servers, starting motor loads (chillers), medical imaging equipment • A UPS not capable of sustaining stable voltage during step loads can compromise the load by decaying the voltage under quick load changes IT FACT:starting up one bank of servers can cause power surges equal to the rating of a 30 kVA UPS and may decay your UPS voltage.
DPQ AdvantagesActive Harmonic Cancellation • Harmonics are reflected by most loads (especially IT loads) and pollute the critical bus • MGE’s inverter technology recognizes the harmonics and produces correction pulses at a high enough resolution to cancel harmonics • The result: The critical bus THD is limited to 3.5% UPS Output reflected harmonics
IGBT Rectifier Advantages • Constant and low input THD (<3%) attenuation at all load levels • Will not disturb sensitive loads sharing the utility / input • Reduction of RMS current • Reduced installation costs (sizing) / current consumption reduced by up to 25%, allowing smaller upstream breakers, transformers, and cables • Unity (0.99) input power factor • Reduced generator sizing due to negligible reactive current • Reduction in component count • Increased reliability • Wide frequency and voltage input range (<25%) • The UPS will not transfer to battery if the generator voltage drops • Does not rely on battery power to sustain dynamic loads • Prolongs battery life • MGE has over 15,000 IGBT rectifiers installed globally (Galaxy 3000 pictured)
UPS Input (utility power) UPS Output Distortion reflected back from UPS input onto other devices sharing utility power Clean Distortion Free Input PowerIGBT Rectifier Advantages • Eliminates harmful distortion that is reflected back onto the utility from the UPS from disturbing sensitive equipment sharing the utility power UPS w/ Input Filter UPS w/oInput Filter Galaxy 3000 w/IGBT Rectifier
IGBT Rectifier Advantages • Low input THD (<3%) at all load levels • IGBT rectifier maintains a low THDI level uniformly throughout all load levels • Potentially harmful harmonic distortion is not reflected back onto the utility to disturb other equipment sharing the line • MGE has over 15,000 IGBT rectifiers installed globally
IGBT Rectifier Advantages • Reduced generator sizing • A unity power factor on the input (PFC or power factor corrected input) means no leading power factor or reactive current reflected onto the utility • Eliminates generator oversizing (low generator to UPS ratio) - saving up to half the cost of the UPS module
IGBT Rectifier Advantages • Reduced installation costs • The power factor corrected input lowers the current demand by up to 25% • Lower input current means smaller upstream breakers, transformers, and cables
IGBT Rectifier Advantages • Increased Reliability • The IGBT rectifier eliminates the need for an input filter (<3% THD w/o a filter) • This means fewer parts - fewer parts means greater reliability
