  2. To provide an overview of the US Army Transportation School’s maritime training for both Enlisted and Warrant Officer Military Occupational Specialties and the status of current USCG approved training for Army mariners Purpose

  3. Warrant Officers: 880A1/2 – Marine Deck Officer (Vessel Master) 881A1/2 – Marine Engineering Officer (Chief Engineer) Enlisted: 88K10-40 (Watercraft Operator) 88L10-40 (Watercraft Engineer) Army Mariners

  4. Certification: Award of Military Occupational Specialty Obtained through formal resident courses, examination challenge, or through commercial equivalencies Soldiers must be certified to grade, i.e., a E-6 must be certified as a K30 or L30; E-7 must be certified as a K40 or L40 Certification is good for 5 years from date of award Recertification is either open or closed book Army Certification & Licensing

Marine Deck Officer WOBC – 31 Weeks (Vessel Master A1 / Mate A2) MDO A2CC – 16 Weeks (Chief Mate / Senior Vessel Master / Pilot) Marine Engineering Officer WOBC - 39 Weeks (Chief Engineer A1 / Asst Eng A2) MEO A2CC – 14 Weeks ( 1st Asst Eng A2 / Chief Engineer A2 / Port Engineer) Marine Warrant Officer Courses

Course Length: 31 Weeks 04 days Academic Hours: 1247.0 Modules: Common Marine Subjects 165 hrs General Deck Seamanship 93 hrs Watch Standing Duties 77 hrs Piloting 137 hrs Collision Avoidance Radar 114 hrs Electronic Navigation 26 hrs Shiphandling 160 hrs Celestial Navigation 131 hrs Piloting/Celestial Nav Performance Test 176 hrs Marine Technical Examination 48 hrs GMDSS 80 hrs BRM 40 hrs Marine Deck Officer Warrant Officer Basic Course Program of Instruction

  7. 88K10 - (E1-E4) Seaman – 6 weeks - Lookout/seamanship duties/helmsman/firefighting/damage control/rules of the road - AB 88K20 - (E5) Operator Class B & C Vessels – 5 weeks - Watch standers A1 & A2(Part of Nav watch team) - Quartermaster duties (AB unlimited) 88K30 - (E6) Watercraft NCO/Boatswain – 8 weeks - Rigging of Tows - Watch stander A1vessel (if radar and GMDSS endorsed – OOW) 88K40 - (E7) Mate of Class A1 Freight & Towing Vessels – 9 weeks - Watch Officer – Class A1 Vessel - Master – 60 tugboat(100 tons) Marine Deck Enlisted Courses

  8. 88L10 - (E1-E4) Engineman – 9 weeks Engineman aboard Class B, A1& A2 88L20 - (E5) Senior Engineman – 16 weeks Chief Engineer Class B Senior Engineman Class A1 & A2 88L30 - (E6) Junior Marine Engineer – 15 weeks Junior Engineer A1 & A2 88L40 - (E7) Assistant Chief Engineer of Class A1 Motor Vessels – 15 Weeks Senior enlisted engineer A2 / Manages / Inspects Maintenance programs Marine Engineer Enlisted Courses

Licensing: Duty Performance Test (competencies) for specific class of vessel for the level of certification Each vessel has a specific DPT for each position Time sensitive – 90 days Includes administrative, deck safety, piloting, celestial, vessel handling, etc., competencies From 27 to 116 task Administered by a qualified Marine Standardization Examiner on orders from the US Army Marine Qualification Office for specific class of vessel Army Certification & Licensing

If individual is licensed to a particular class of vessel, yet has not sailed on that type of vessel for over 12 months, then a revalidation must be completed by a qualified individual (Master/Chief Engineer) License is valid as long as certification is current Endorsements: GMDSS, Unlimited Radar Observer/ARPA, BRM, Port Engineer, Pilot Typical Senior Warrant Officer or Senior NCO with 20 yrs of service is licensed for all classes of watercraft and typically has 15 years of sea service Army Certification & Licensing

Functional Courses: USCG Approved GMDSS – 80 hours Marine Radar Observers Course (unlimited) – 40 hours ARPA – 40 hours MROC Refresher – 24 hours Bridge Resource Management – 40 hours *Mercator Sailing *Meteorology *Rules of the Road *Search and Rescue *Stability & Trim *Tides and Currents *Taught within the structure of existing courses (MDO WOBC, K20-40) Current USCG Approved Training

  12. Marine Operations Division – internal review of approach to STCW crosswalk High Speed Craft Course(200 hours) Marine Engineering Division – complete program of instruction audit to determine relevant training MERPAC – future participation and support USCG Approved Training – the road ahead
