Integrating Access to GOS in Search and Rescue Applications using NASA WorldWindNadine Alameh & David Collins AAG Washington DC April 16, 2010
Outline • NASA Search and Rescue Application • Requirements for data discovery and access • NASA WorldWind • 3D Capabilities • Open Source • Support for web service standards • Integrating Access to GOS • Screen shots illustrating integration Work funded by FGDC CAP Grant
NASA Search and Rescue Laboratory • NASA participates in the National Search and Rescue Committee • NASA provides research and development to provide SAR tools for the SAR forces • The Cospas-Sarsat satellite system that detects and locates transmitting distress beacons • Distress Alerting and Satellite System (DASS) • Current R&D project to prove the concept of using Mid-Earth-Orbit satellite constellations to provide the same detection and location of transmitting distress beacons but in a near instantaneous mode (2-3 hours) • SAR Visualization Software for Search Planners
Need for 3D Visualization • Purpose • Aid a Search Planner to visualize conditions a missing pilot may have confronted and determine places to search
What is NASA WorldWind? • 3D Geospatial Information Visualization SDK • Easily visualize distributed satellite imagery and products. • Zoom from satellite view to any place on Earth. • Explore data in a visually rich 3D as if you were really there.
What is NASA WorldWind? • API-Centric Architecture • Suite of modular components embeddable as part of any application. • Incorporate virtual globe technology in any application
What is NASA WorldWind? • NASA Open Source • Anyone can advance the technology without being constrained by vendor features or proprietary lock-in. • Alignment with standards to further the infrastructure necessary for accelerated innovation and maximum interoperability of information and intelligence.
Partnering with WorldWind • Supports 3D terrain visualization (NAIP, USGS aerial, Landsat) • Provides capability to view aircraft tracks in the air and their subtrack on the ground including radar acquired tracks • Provides capability to view cloud ceilings, cloud cover both visible and IR • Provides capability to show all possible crash locations in challenging terrain for a chosen altitude • Provides capability to extend track to estimate pilot possible actions beyond last known point
Need data! • It is critical for both the local authorities and the regional centers to have access to accurate and up-to-date data so support the rescue operations • “The hardest part of our job is locating and accessing up-do-date data” • High resolution imagery • Base maps • Aeronautical sectional maps (runways, navaids, etc) • Weather, Precipitation, Clouds, etc • Local/county data Geodata.gov!
Geodata.gov • GOS is a human user interface to locate, visualize and download domestic geospatial data
Leveraging Standards in GOS • Finding the data: OGC Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) • GOS is supported by a OGC Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) catalog that allows other external clients to search and retrieve metadata on data, services and other resource types referenced by URL
Leveraging GOS Web Services • Finding the data: OGC Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) • GOS is supported by a OGC Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) catalog that allows other external clients to search and retrieve metadata on data, services and other resource types referenced by URL • Visualizing the data: OGC Web Map Service (WMS) • WorldWind supports OGC Web Map Service
Leveraging GOS Web Services • Finding the data: OGC Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) • GOS is supported by a OGC Catalog Service for the Web (CSW) catalog that allows other external clients to search and retrieve metadata on data, services and other resource types referenced by URL • Visualizing the data: OGC Web Map Service (WMS) • WorldWind supports OGC Web Map Service • Outcome • Discover SAR relevant data via the GOS Portal Catalog • Access, exploit and visualize discovered data in 3D environment • Inform SAR user of relevant resource updates from GOS
Update Feeds • All updates • Live Map Server updates • Most recent search updates
Benefits to SAR Spectacular Can’t wait to try it out • Enhanced discovery, integration and visualization of data • Tapping immensely rich datasets of the NSDI including data that SAR personnel may not have otherwise been able to locate or use in time • Combine data (recent and historical) on-demand at various levels • Get latest data directly from its custodians hence alleviating the data assembly overhead in SAR situations Eye opening “You have wet our appetite for all the data that we could find through the tool”
Power of Web Services and Standards • Access to NSDI = access to needed data! • Access to official sources of information • Quality information through FGDC Status Checker • Ease of integration based on standards • Catalog + 3D visualization + Open Source Java SDK = Powerful combination • Open source solution based on standards and web services = sustainability, more users, easier integration within applications, wider reuse, etc. • Updated by community as GOS evolves and standards mature/change • Inherits all the advances made by WorldWind community (e.g. support for KML) • Catalog CSW = opening new doors for discovery and connections • Little effort to connect to other catalogs (such as GEOSS, ESA FedEO, etc) • Staying up-to-date with recent updates feature
