What is S.E.E.D? What is S.E.E.D?
S.E.E.D, or Stuart Enterprise for Economic Development • S.E.E.D was formed as a non profit corporation and was formerly known as Stuart Development Corporation. Stuart Development Corporation was developed over 40 years ago by Stuart businesses to promote development in Stuart. Stuart Development Corporation was a for profit organization. SEED has been involved with some projects since around 1990.
In 2001, SEED, with the cooperation of the City of Stuart, traded land that Stuart Development Corporation owned that was a drug infested and ran down trailer park. SEED cleaned up the area and built an apartment complex. That has been sold and is now currently condos, located on North Division Street. This is now valued at over $500,000. Compared to a ran down trailer park.
SEED, partnered with Farmers Electric Coop, built a spec warehouse on SW 8th Street in Mark’s Business Park. That spec warehouse has since been sold to Wausau and has a valuation of over $400,000 and provides local jobs.
SEED was involved in the tearing down of the old Stage Stop Restaurant, which was a huge eye sore as you came into town from the interstate.
SEED purchased three buildings in Downtown Stuart, and with a development agreement with the City, SEED had the Downtown buildings demolished and sold the property to an investment company. Since then, a Dollar General store has been built. The property is now valued at over $300,000.
SEED was the applicant to receive a grant to build the walking/bike trail that is currently around the athletic complex. SEED realizes that recreation has a lot to do with economic development.
SEED traded land with the City of Stuart on the SW side of town to make it possible for the City to construct the helipad to land life flight.
SEED is currently involved with the Wambold Addition at the request of the City, to be able to give away lots to home owners and builders as an aggressive program to increase the population of Stuart and to help improve the local economy as well as add to the tax base. The location of the new addition is located north of the High School.
Due to the efforts of SEED over the past 20 years, they have been instrumental in a 1.2 million dollar increase in valuation to the projects that they have been involved in. With their efforts, more jobs have been added to Stuart by adding more businesses.
