*Causes and Effects of Truancy* CAUSES • Peer pressure • Separation or divorce within the family • Abuse or neglect • Mental & physical health issues • Drug and alcohol abuse by a parent and/or the student • Moving repeatedly • Low self esteem • Financial problems • Lack of friends • Safety concerns which may include pressure from gangs to threats and intimidation • Lack of academic skills • Boredom EFFECTS • Decreased earning ability • Involvement in daytime crime, such as breaking and entering, vandalism, and shoplifting • Increased risk of dropping out of school • Two and a half times more likely to be on welfare • Involvement in gangs • Struggling to catch up with school assignments • Failing classes • Risk of not obtaining a higher education
*THINGS THAT TRUANCY CAUSES* It can cause parents getting punished Getting sent to court Facing time in Jail Children getting sent to juvenile
*Facing Time in Jail* Parents can even face time in jail they and be giving a fine. Some parents have passed through jail already because of their truant children. Although parents are not or is the reason that their child is committing truancy they still get punished for that the only reason of their child being truant. There are two laws that parents could be fined with first one is the GBP50 and it could be doubled to the GBP100 if the parents don’t pay within twenty-eight days . If the parents don’t pay the fine within twenty-eight days the person who gave the parents the fine can drop it or prosecute it. Fines can be issued or given by the police, an authority, or even a teacher.
*Facing Court* Parents are suffering the consequence of going to court and facing a judge just because their children are committing truancy. Parents face court as soon as the Border finds out that the child is committing truancy. The judge could order the truant students to do a lot of things such as take a GED test if at least sixteen , attend classes without missing any more days, do community service, or go to a dropout probation officer with their parents and complete job skills training.
*What Children can Face* Truant student attends court or their parents take the truant student to court hearing. Truant children can even loose the benefits they get from the government because they are committing truancy. There is also a law enforcement is that a probation officer can take custody of a truant student. Until the truant student attends court or their parents take the truant student to court hearing. Also, if the student has too many absences it could cause the student to graduate late. take a GED test if at least sixteen , attend classes without missing any more days, do community service, or go to a dropout probation officer with their parents and complete job skills training and so on.
*Things that could happen to Children if they don’t attend School* If the student does not attend to school every day the student will have difficulty in making friends and understanding the schoolwork and be unable to do it. A police officer could even take custody of a child for being truant. If a student is truant it could affect their social and education life.
*Ways to Know Children are Being Truant* Child don’t talk about school. - Not having no homework - Changing the subject when bringing school up. - Not talking about friends. -
