  1. Four Approaches to Incorporating WebCT Into Your Teaching Style a ten-minute presentation

  2. Web Course Tools -- what will you build? • WebCT is a toolkit for building a web site • your site is a private ‘classroom’ • you choose to add documents, links, and communication tools for students to use

  3. As you plan, keep in mind: What is the learning outcome desired? What will you need to learn? What is your time availability? Who will you need to work with? How much effort will it take to teach using WebCT?

  4. WebCT Used forClass Problem-Solving • focus is usually on a few selected communication tools • intent is to ‘fix’ communication issues between you and students: scheduling, deadlines, grade posting • fast course build, immediate results • least time investment required of all the approaches

  5. WebCT used for Classroom Management • more extensive use of tools to communicate, document posting • intent is to hold most of non-lecture communication with students online • short course build time, can start shortly before or during the term • moderate investment of time and ongoing maintenance

  6. WebCT used for ‘Blended’ Teaching • online learning time may equal classroom time • intent is to teach partly online for enrichment and convenience • longer course build time, includes classroom management tools plus ‘lecture’ content (or equivalent) • longer investment in course development and learning time, more ongoing use & maintenance

  7. WebCT used for Online Teaching • online learning replaces all or majority of classroom learning • intent is to extend availability of a course beyond the physical campus, convenience • longest planning and implementation time • most ongoing use and maintenance during the term

  8. Planning: comparing relative time and effort 1: minimal 2: moderate 3: extensive 4: intensive

  9. Next steps: • planning guides • staff support • learning resources
