Jefferson Davis • Born: June 3, 1808 • Died: December 6, 1889 • Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States of America. • He was also Commander - in - Chief of the Confederate Army. • He was a colonel in the United States Army during the Mexican-American War. • He was Secretary of War and also a United States Senato

Ulysses Grant • Born: April 27, 1877 • Died: July 23, 1885 • At Shiloh, Grant fought one of the bloodiest battles in the West. • Lincoln appointed Grant General-in-Chief of the Union Army in March 1864. • Grant's first battles during the Civil War were launched from his base at Cairo, Illinois • In 1862, as a general he fought a series of battles and was promoted to major general after forcing the surrender of a large Confederate army and gaining control of Kentucky and most of Tennessee.

  4. Robert E. Lee • Born: January 19, 1807 • Died: October 12, 1870 • Lee wanted all peaceful ways of resolving the differences between North and South—such as the Crittenden Compromise—to be tried first, and was one of the few to foresee a long and difficult war. • Lee resigned from the Army on April 20 and took up command of the Virginia state forces on April 23.
