Man Ray • August 27, 1890–November 18, 1976 • American Dada and Surrealist artist • Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in Philly & raised in Brooklyn • Family changed name from Radnitzky to Ray due to anti-semitism • “Manny” condensed name to Man…thus Man Ray • Had scholarship for architecture but chose studio art • In 1918, photography became successful medium for Man Ray • Friends with famous DADA artist Marcel Duchamp • Helped establish the artistic group of American DADA artists the “Others” • Moved to France in 1921 • Created photograms technique which he called Rayograms • http://www.manraytrust.com/
