  2. Poliomyelitis(Polio) • A viral disease that can affect the nervous system and can lead to partial or full paralysis

  3. Transmission • Highly infectious illness that spreads through contact between people, by nasal and oral secretions, and by contact with contaminated feces. • Poliovirus enters the body through the mouth multiplying along the way to the digestive tract, where it further multiplies

  4. Symptoms • In about 95% of all polio case the person has no symptoms at all, known as asymptomatic cases. The rest of polio cases can be divided into 3 types: Abortive Polio, Non-Paralytic Polio, and Paralytic Polio

  5. Three Types of Polio • Abortive Polio- mild illness, viral symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, nausea and diarrhea. • Non-Paralytic Polio- typically involve the symptoms of abortive polio, with additional neurological symptoms, such as sensitivity to light and neck stiffness • Paralytic Polio- viral like symptoms loss of superficial reflexes and muscle pain or spasms. Paralysis usually asymmetric follows

  6. Prevalence • World wide there are only 716 people known with the Poliovirus because of the vaccination for Polio

  7. Prevention • In the United States, children are recommended to receive the inactivated polio vaccine at 2 months and 4 months of age, and then twice more before entering elementary school

  8. Treatment • Polio has no cure, so prevention is the most effective means to combat it. Certain drugs and therapies can offer supportive care for patients to counter some of the effects of muscle involvement

  9. Personal and Global Consequences • Personal-If a person became ill with the poliovirus he/she can suffer temporary or permanent paralysis and even death if the person chooses not the take the vaccine • Global-Polio vaccination is recommended world wide because of the risk of imported cases. Polio was eliminated from the western hemisphere. Today it circulates in a handful of cuntries, with occasional neighboring countries.
