Mean- “the average”, the sum of the entries in a set of data divided by the number of entries. Example: Let’s find the mean for the given data set:
Median- the number in the “middle” of the data set 32, 31, 40, 41, 56, 59, 59, 62, 75, 79 First, put the set in order from L→G. We’re lucky! This one’s already ordered. Now, find the middle value: 32, 31, 40, 41, 56, 59, 59, 62, 75, 79 Since there are an even number of entries, you must average the middle two entries: (56 + 59)/2 = 57.5 The median is 57.5
Mode- the number that appears the most often in the data set. This is as simple as it sounds. Let’s look at our set: 32, 31, 40, 41, 56, 59, 59, 62, 75, 79 What number appears the most often? 59 A set can have one, two, or no mode.
Range- the difference between the largest and smallest entries in a data set. 32,31, 40, 41, 56, 59, 59, 62, 75, 79 79 - 32 = 47
