  1. A love story Predicate nominatives, predicate adjectives, direct objects & objects of a preposition

  2. Once upon a time… • But before we get to that, we need to understand a few basic things about the structure of a sentence • There are two parts of a sentence: the subject and the predicate. • The predicate has several sub-parts as well

  3. Subject & Predicate • The subject of the sentence is the agent of the verb. • It is WHO or WHAT is/does the verb • Predicate: The part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject • Subject+ Predicate = sentence

  4. Sally & Johnny: A Love Story • Once upon a time there were two students, Sally & Johnny. • Sally was a girl. She was 16 years old. She was terribly shy. She stuttered every time someone talked to her. She was a very good student though. She focused on her studies. She didn’t have any friends and had never been out on a date. • Then one day, Johnny, a cute boy in her class, asked her out. Sally was a mystery to Johnny. Johnny wanted to get to know her. Nervously, Sally said yes to the date.

Practice, practice, practice: identify the subject, verb, & predicate • Sally is 16 years old. • Sallyis 16 years old. • Subject= Sally, is=verb, is 16 years old= predicate • She is terribly shy. • She isterribly shy. • Subject= She, is=verb, was terribly shy= predicate • She focuses on her studies. • Shefocuses on her studies • Subject= She, focuses=verb, focused on her studies= predicate

  6. Predicate Nominatives/Adjectives • When your subject and predicate are linked by a helping/linking verb or state of being verb, you will have a predicate nominative or predicate adjective. • Both answer WHO or WHAT and refer back to the subject.

Predicate Nominatives • Nominative refers to a noun. • From“nominativus” = “pertaining to naming” • Naming is what nouns do • “nom”= “noun” in French • Sallywas a girl. • Sally = subject • was= state of being verb • Predicate nominative= girl • Sally is being restated by using the noun “girl” • Think of it as an equation: Sally= girl

  8. Practice, practice, practice… • Sally was a mystery to Johnny. • Sally= subject • was = state of being verb • mystery = predicate nominative • Sally= mystery

  9. Sally & Johnny: A Love Story Cont’d • On Friday night, Johnny picked Sally up from her house. Sally looked beautiful. She wore a pretty dress. • Since both Sally and Johnny seemed nervous, the ride to the restaurant was silent. They listened to the radio. They heard “We are the World” by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. Johnny was calm by the time they arrived at the restaurant. Sally was still anxious.

  10. What they heard…identify the subject, verb, and PN • We are the world.We are the children.We are the ones who make a brighter day,so let's start giving. (Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, "We Are the World," 1985) • Wearethe world. (we=world) • Weare the children. (we= children) • Weare the ones who make a brighter day,so let's start giving. (we=ones)

  11. Create a predicate nominative Valentine!1) On your piece of colored paper, write a Valentine’s day sentiment which says: -You are a/the________. (Make sure the blank is filled in with a noun!) 2) Then label the parts equation style.

  13. Predicate Adjectives • Predicate adjectives refer back to the subject of the clause/sentence by describing the subject with an adjective after a helping/linking verb or a state of being verb. Example: • The ride wassilent. • ride= subject • was= state of being verb • silent= predicate adjective • ride= silent

  14. Practice, practice, practice… • Sally & Johnny seemed nervous. • Sally & Johnny = subjects • seemed= state of being verb • nervous = predicate adjective • Sally & Johnny = nervous • Johnny was calm. • Johnny= subject • was= state of being verb • calm= predicate adjective • Johnny= calm
