The remaining Units in Grade 5 (Units 13-16), will be formatted differently than Units 1-12. • Formats will be in PowerPoint form. • Core instruction will be provided in the following areas: • Fractions, Decimal and Percents • Ratios/Rates • Integers/Expressions/Inequalities • Graphing and Data • In addition, based on student data (Formative assessments, unit assessments, etc.), these last few weeks of school should also focus on differentiating your instruction (small groups) to meet the needs of students on current grade level standards not yet mastered. • It would be appropriate given the multitude of resources provided in Units 1-12 to revisit and utilize those resources not already used. • Only utilize current grade level content to determine students’ progress for the 4th nine weeks.   3. Content Development Students in grade 5 have learned how to identify and plot coordinates in a coordinate grid. Students then use these skills to plot polygons on a coordinate grid. Although students have not worked with area in 5th grade, they apply their knowledge learned about finding area of a rectangle in 4th grade and connecting that to finding the area of a parallelogram. Students need concrete experiences in developing the formula for the area of a parallelogram and seeing that it is derived from the formula for area of a rectangle. Finding a mean, median and mode of sets of data is based on concepts learned in Unit 9, where students analyzed and used operations on sets of data. Mean, or average, can be found by finding the sum of the group of numbers from a set of data and then dividing by the number of addends. Median of a set of data is the middle number when the data is written in order. If there is an even number of data items, then the median is the sum of the two middle items divided by 2. The mode of a data set is the data value or values that occur most often. A data set may have no mode, one mode, or several modes. Histograms are a form of bar graph. However, in a histogram, the bars touch because they represent continuous intervals. Students need experiences in constructing histograms in order to build understanding of these representations of data.
