  2. In 1977, the Iraqi government ordered the construction of nuclear materials testing reactor. This led Israeli to attack the facility because they thought that it acted in self-defense

In 1979, Iranian revolution resulted in a Shi’ite Muslim theocratic state being established. • Iraq saw this as a threat because Iraq too had a shi’ite majority and was ruled by Hussein. • Population splited between supporters of the Ba’ath party and those who sympathized with the Iranian position.

  4. In 1980, Saddam declared war on Iraq • Attacked Iranian soldiers and civilians with chemical weapons • War ended when America and Western European countries supported Iraq

In 1990, Iraq faced economic disaster because Kuwait had increased production of oil which kept oil revenues relatively low for Iraq. • Iraq declared war on Kuwait in August 1990 • United Nation demanded Iraq to withdraw from Kuwait, but Iraq refused • Iraq launched Scud missile attack against Israel because they thought other anti-israeli sentiment countries would help them. • It failed because Israel agreed to remain out of the conflict. • Later, Iraqi forces were destroyed and had to be withdrawn.

  6. Before Iraq left, they destroyed Kuwait’s oil wells and this caused an economic disaster in Kuwait.
