Introduction • The community language learning takes its principle from the more general Counseling-Learning approach develop by Charles A. Curran. Curran studied adult learning for many years.
Approach • Community Language Learning (CLL) is a teaching method that considers their students as “Whole persons”. • Curran says there are six elements of effective learning. Security, agretion, attention, reflection, retention, and discrimination. • It believe that a way to deal with the fears of students is for teachers to become “Language Counselor”. • Learning is dynamic and creative.
Design • The syllabus that is used in Community Language Learning is aProportional Syllabus. • This syllabus basically attempts to develop an “over all competence”. • This syllabus is designed to be dynamic, not static, with ample opportunity for feedback and flexibility.
Learner Roles • Initially the learner is very dependent upon the teacher. He is a “client” of the counselor’s. It is recognized, however, that as the learner continues to study, he becomes increasingly independent.
Teacher Roles • The teacher’s initial role is that of a counselor. This doesn’t mean that the teacher is a therapist, or that the teacher doesn’t teaching. Rather, it means that the teacher recognized how threatening a new learning situation can be for adult learners, so he skillfully understand and support his students in their struggle to master the target language.
Procedure • Tape-recording student conversation • Transcription • Reflection on experience • Reflective listening • Human Computert.M. • Small group tasks
The Advantages of CLL • Building a relationship with and among students. • Threatening any new learning experience. • Makes students feel comfortable and enjoyable during the lesson. • Helps student to overcome their negative feelings. • Build trust and can help to reduce the threat of the new learning situation.
The Weakness of CLL • Only suggested for adults learners. • Individual skills is not emphasized.
