  1. Reading Counts Informational Meeting August 29, 2014

  2. What is Reading Counts? • Scholastic Reading Counts is a literature-based motivation program designed to get students to read and understand what they have read.

  3. Reading Counts • Reading Counts is an independent reading program that motivates students to become avid readers. Students read books of their own choice at their Lexile Level and then take a computerized quiz to test for comprehension.

  4. SRI Assessment • Each student took an Assessment using the SRI or Scholastic Reading Inventory. • First a practice test and then the real assessment.

  5. Your Score • Your score is reported as a Lexile number. • The Lexile level is the difficultly level at which the student can easily comprehend about 75% of the text. • The child should read between 100L below and 50L above and the Lexile measure. • For example, if your Lexile score is 400, your range would be 300-450.

  6. Recommended Reading:Every child will have access to a list.

  7. Find the Right Book for You! • Reading is like the 3 Bears’ chairs. . . 1. Too Hard (Papa Bear’s) and the student may become frustrated and feel she or he doesn’t like reading. 2. Too Soft (Mama Bear’s) and the student may become relaxed and bored which can lead to lack of concentration on the text. 3.Just Right (Baby Bear’s Chair) • Enough familiar text to feel competent • Enough surprising vocabulary to stay engaged • An increased sense of mastery

  10. Incentive Program Doctorate = End of the Year Goal for Reading 30 minutes per night

Rewards: • Associate: Yellow Reading Bracelet and Certificate • Bachelors: Orange Reading Bracelet, Certificate, and computer lab time • Masters: Pink Reading Bracelet, Certificate, and a free book. • Doctorate: Blue Reading Bracelet, Certificate, and a special lunch. • End of the Year Goal for Reading 30 minutes per night • Genius: Red Reading Bracelet, Certificate, and a party.

  13. Lexile Scores for Jobs • Look at this next slide to see why reading is so important! • You will see the Lexile requirements for different types of jobs. • Keep in mind, the Lexile of the CA driver’s test is 1,000!!

  17. What Can I do? • Let your child pick out his or her own books based on his or her interests. • Set goals and reward reading at home. • Let your kids see you read! • Read together: One can read aloud to the other. • Make reading fun and memorable. • Read everyday!
