Welcome to Mrs. Ewald’s 7th and 8th Grade Math class
A Little About Me • I have taught 5 years • I am committed to helping prepare my students for high school and beyond • Yes, I do have high expectations for all my students but I am ALWAYS here to help them when they need it
For the first time, the Ft Thomas School System will have a unified K-12 Mathematics Program The University Of Chicago School Mathematics Program • This will benefit our students in many ways • Consistent expectations across grade levels • Consistent foundational skills for all students • Programs that build on each other • A gradual shift from the concrete hands-on approach in the elementary grades to the more real world application model of high school • Students will be expected to be active learners which will empower them
Do Ask Read Try
SPUR • Skills (what do I do?) • Properties (why can I do this?) • Uses (when can I apply this method?) • Representations (how can I show this best or in a different way?)
What does Reading Have To Do With Math? • Just like reading prior to the lesson in any subject • Chance to preview what will be taught • Gives students an opportunity to make connections to past knowledge • Questions about the reading help students clarify what they already know and what they need to learn from the lesson • Students are not expected to master ideas in the reading – just gain familiarity and be ready to discuss
Other Key Points • Continual review of previous material increases retention • Focuses on active involvement and student ownership which fosters independent thinking • Stresses real life application to help students see relevance • Uses technology to enhance learning and to develop technological skills
Rigorous ProgramWider scope of content • Authors recommend an adjusted grading scale • We have chosen the following modified grading scale 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D Below 60 F
Means of Assessing Progress • Daily Practice (including homework quizzes) • Classroom Practice • Quizzes (2-3 per chapter) • Tests • Open Responses ( 1 per chapter) • Notebook
