Summary of Recommendations The Steering Committee has considered the reports of the Working Parties and Sub-Committees in relation to the Implementation Plan. The reports were accepted with some amendments and were submitted to the Vice Chancellor for approval. The Vice Chancellor approved the final report of the Steering Committee on 18 November 2013. Recommendation 1 • The Steering Committee agreed to a number of general principles governing the establishment of Centres in the RSHA as follows: • Centres will not be Academic Operating Units. • The decision to establish a Centre by formal approval of ANU Council will be made on a case by case basis determined by the educational and research profile and programs of that Centre. Centres must be resourced and supported administratively by the School hosting them. • Preferences for accommodation as outlined in each of the individual reports will be referred to the Space Management Working Party for consideration. Recommendation 2 • A new School, bringing together the current School of Language Studies and the School of Cultural Inquiry, excluding Art History, will be established. • The School of Cultural Inquiry and School of Language Studies will be disestablished. • The new School will be named the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics. • A Centre for Classical Studies will be established to oversee the Classics Museum and liaise with the Friends of the Classics Museum. Art History will be transferred from the current School of Cultural Inquiry and integrated into the School of Art. • A new Centre for Art History and Art Theory will be established in the School of Art. • The proposed inclusion of ‘Curatorship’ in the name of the new Centre for Art History and Theory was not accepted. Recommendation 4 • A Centre for Heritage and Museum Studies (CHMS), located within the School of Archaeology and Anthropology, will be created. • The name of the School of Archaeology and Anthropology will not be changed. • The Institute for Professional Practice in Heritage and the Arts (IPPHA), the Master of Liberal Arts and the Interdisciplinary and Cross-Cultural Research (ICCR) PhD program will be based in the Centre for Heritage and Museum Studies in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology. Recommendation 5 • The Interdisciplinary Humanities Group (IHUG) will be disestablished. • The Centres in IHUG have, where possible, been moved to AOUs to provide a strong, sustainable base and enhance research capacity within the AOU. • The governance and financial structure of the Centres has been preserved. • The broader role of the Centres across the College, the University and externally, has been recognized and preserved. Recommendation 6 • The Humanities Research Centre (HRC) will be located in the new School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics. • A revised governance structure for the HRC has been created: • An HRC Executive • An disciplinary-based Academic Committee will be established to determine annual theme, conferences and visiting fellows • An external Advisory Board will be re-established College of Arts and Social Sciences
Recommendation 7 • The Digital Humanities Hub will be renamed the Centre for Digital Humanities Research (CDHR). • The CDHR will be situated in the School of Archaeology and Anthropology and closely aligned to the CHMS. • Decisions regarding the strategic direction of CDHR will be made by an Advisory Board, which reports to the CASS Research Committee. Recommendation 7 (continued) • The College strategic funding dedicated to digital humanities will be managed by the College. • The Head of the CDHR will be an eminent CASS scholar appointed following a call for expressions of interest College of Arts and Social Sciences
