The year is 2099. In 2060 a number of natural disasters occurred around the world due to global warming. Scientists and technicians began to build underground domes and passageways as temporary shelters. Over time, these “burrows” expanded and grew into dome-like cities. By 2099 the underground cities were sealed. The children who were born and raised underground had never seen the sky or smelled fresh air. Geo and Crystal are two such children.
Geo went to talk to Feldspar. The old lady was eager to share her memories of life on the surface. They sat and talked together while sharing food wafers.
Feldspar pulled two metal plates from a shelf built into a rocky ledge. She carefully laid them on a stone table and lifted the top plate. A flattened marigold lay on the bottom plate, faded and dry, but still golden. In his excitement, Geo tried to lift the flower, but it crumbled into dust.
Geo got a waterproof flashlight and wrapped some food wafers in a watertight bag.
Geo turned as if he was leaving, but suddenly jumped into the reservoir. The guard tried to stun him with an echo gun but geo was already underwater. He swam through the tunnel and came up on the other side. From there, he followed signs that other travellers had written on the cave walls . Eventually he came to an iron ladder and climbed up to the surface. At first the light was blinding. Through squinted eyes he thought he could see a figure of a girl his age
Geo looked at jade, and then at the tunnel leading back to the underground. Clutching the marigold, he made up his mind. He knew in his heart just what he should do.
Geo went down through the water and pasted the guard unnoticed, when he reached Feldspar and Crystal he said…
“Feldspar, Crystal come with me, to the surface it’s not damaged it’s all fixed!”
Feldspar, Crystal and Geo went up unnoticed through the water and met… JADE
