  1. Chapter 1 Activity • 1. What is the tone of the postcard? What are his intentions for writing the postcard? • 2. Infer: Who is Wayne? Why did McCandless write him a postcard? • 3. Who is Jim Gallien? • 4. What supplies did “Alex” bring with him? • 5. Compare your group’s survival list to the supplies that Alex brought. What can you infer about his character based on the supplies he brought. • 6. What does Gallien give to “Alex”? Why doesn’t he report Alex to the Alaska State Troopers?

Reading with a Group- Know your role! • In addition to the following roles, each group member MUST contribute to the overall discussion of the novel. • Reader (1-2 people) The Reader(s) will read the story out loud as the rest of the group follows along. • Discussion Leader (1 person) The Discussion Leader will pause at appropriate times to pose questions, discuss, and analyze important aspects of the story (use the discussion guide for help) • Scribe (2 people) The Scribe (s) will take detailed notes during the group’s discussion. In addition, they will find at least 4 quotations that properly illuminate the themes developed in the chapter.
