Lurking Variable • A variable that has an important effect and yet is not included amongst the predictor variables under consideration. • A lurking variable can falsely suggest a strong relationship between 2 variables or may hide a relationship that is really there.

Find the Lurking Variable Studies have found that there is a strong correlation between sunscreen use and skin cancer. The findings are actually very interesting. They show that as the amount of sunscreen by a person increases, so does their likelihood to get skin cancer in his life. How can this be?
Identify the Lurking Variable • In the National Basketball Association, there is a strong positive association between the number of turnovers a player has and the number of points that he scores. A turnover is when a player loses the ball to the other team. Could a player increase his point totals by turning the ball over more frequently?
