Who Was William Dawes? By Mrs. Napolillo
Who was I? My name is William Dawes I was born in Boston on April 5, 1745. I worked as a tanner, which means that I made leather products. On May 3, 1768 I married my lovely wife, Mehitable May. We had a very busy house because we had 9 children! I believed that the 13 colonies should be independent from England. Once the war began I helped to fight for our independence!
One Night in History You have probably heard of Paul Revere. Well, you may not know this, but he was not alone on the night of April 18, 1775, I was there too! When we learned that the British were heading to Concord by foot, we jumped on our horses and galloped toward Lexington and Concord. I reached Lexington shortly after Paul and we were able to warn our fellow colonists, John Hancock and Sam Adams about the British. We leapt onto our horses and continued on to Concord…
but we were Captured! British soldiers stopped and questioned us. We never made it to Concord, but thankfully Samuel Prescott did, and the Concord militia was ready when the British marched into town.
This picture shows the colonists that I warned fighting against the British. This map shows the routes that Paul Revere and I took on the night of April 18, 1775.
Why Should You Remember Me? Believe it or not, I had a very important impact on your life today! Imagine if Paul Revere, Samuel Prescott and I had been captured before we reached Lexington and Concord. The colonial militias would not have been ready to fight. The warning that the colonists received from us allowed them to hide supplies that they would need. These were the first battles of the American Revolution and because the colonists were ready, they won an important battle. This showed the King of England that we were prepared to fight for out independence!
