Agenda • Criteria for success. • Challenges and new fundraising criteria. • Fundraising process. • Grants, partnering, impact. • Group fundraising discussions. • Recommendations.

Success is not an accident….. …….and here’s why. • Successful clubs are managed like a good business. • Good businesses have a written plan that includes goals, timelines and assigned tasks. • Clubs need to learn to “think outside the box.”
Learn to “think outside the box” OR be like everyone else!
Why we need new fundraising ideas. • Aging member population . • Hard labor requirements. • Need to fix the problem. • Broader scale to consider: recruit, retain, PR. • Huge impact on community.
Funding Challenges • Need to sustain and grow current Lions initiatives like VLEI, INOVA low vision, Sight & Hearing Van, PBV, etc. • Sight First II funding requirements of $400 per Lion over next three years to contribute our fair share of global effort.
Criteria forNew Fundraising • Potential for sizable contributions. • Focus on increasing FHLC exposure. • Leverages capabilities of others. • Capable of gaining corporate contributions; has multi-year life. • Creative and FUN for the club. • Potential to increase membership. • Related to Lions goals & objectives.
Fundraising Process • The challenge. • Objectives. • Process steps.
Some Fundraising Ideas • Peanut Sales year round. • Hot Dog Eating Contest-July 4t • Chili Cook Off/Barbecue contest. • Car Donation Program. • Big Event at Patriot Center. • Club History Book.
More Fundraising Ideas • Lions Newspaper – sell ads. • $10k Reverse Raffle. • Smash a Car Booth – July 4th. • Work at Local Restaurant. • Vision Center Grants. • Partnerships with FACETS, NVCSA.
Why We Chose to Start a Car Donation Program • To replace loss of funds from cancelled fundraiser. • To take advantage of new IRS rules. • To provide a WIN, WIN, WIN for all parties involved.
Benefits of Program • Generates more charitable funds than other donation programs. • We pick-up, handle and sell all donated vehicles. • Donor gets higher (legal) tax deduction.
IRS Regulations • IRS changed vehicle donation claim rules in January 2005. • Old rules: Donor claims fair market value. • New rules: Donor claims amount charity receives.
Why Our Program Is Different • IRS exception allows fair market value deduction if charity “materially improves vehicle.” • We run our own program. • We don’t accept all vehicles offered. • We repair & materially improve vehicles. • We sell most vehicles we receive.
Sharing Our Success With Other Lions Clubs • Vehicles can be donated by another Lions Club. • We do all the work to repair or perform maintenance. • We sell vehicle. • We share 50% of net profit with donating Lions Club.
Grants and Partnering • Leverage local funds with LCIF $. • Virginia Lions Eye Institute. • Fairfax INOVA Hospital. • Northern VA Cued Speech Association. • Prevent Blindness Virginia. • Truro Episcopal Church. • Lions Clubs of Kabale, Uganda. • Other Lions Clubs.
Impact • $75,000 Truro Episcopal Church donation. • $350,000 LCIF grant for Eye Hospital in Uganda. • $30,000 LCIF grant with $41,500 team contributions for Uganda hospital. • $75,000 LCIF grant – dental & x-ray. • $75,000 LCIF grant, $12,500 from INOVA, $12,500 from VLEI for 24-A low vision. • $22,873 LCIF grant, same $ from local partners for PBV screen of 20,000+ children. • Serving MILLIONS not hundreds.
Ideas For Discussion? • Is change needed in your club? • Are your major fundraisers dead? • What fundraisers would be an improvement in person hours spent and money earned? • What good fundraisers does your club have?
