Unit 1: Memories (the past) • There are various ways to express the past: • I played football after dinner yesterday. • David’s life changed after he met John Lennon. • Nero didn’t try to help the people as Rome burned. • I used to love hot dogs when I was a kid. Now, I hate them. • I never used to smoke, but now I smoke three packs a day!

  4. Unit 1: Memories (the past) • There are several ways to express the past. • What did you do yesterday? • When did Columbus arrive in America? • Who did you eat lunch with today? • Where were you when I called? • How did you hurt your head? • Why did she marry that guy?

  6. Unit 1: Memories (the past) • Audio journal 2: Your best or favorite memory (before high school). • Share your memories with your group. • REMEMBER: Try to use PAST verbs!

  7. Conversation • Listen to the conversation. • Make notes about: • Who the people are. • What is the situation (where are they?) • What are they talking about? • What are some of the memories they talk about? • What is the problem at the end?

  8. Conversation (p.4) • With a partner: • Continue the conversation between Sally and Akiko. • Try to use past-tense.

  9. Language in action (p.5) • Make notes about “A place I used to go…” • Share with your group. • Group members: try to ask other questions after the speaker is finished.

  10. Homework • Summary assignment 1 (Due 03/20: Tuesday). • Read the article in the “homework” section of the website. • Write a short summary of what you read. • Summary = ?

  11. Summary • Read the article. • Find the most important ideas/information. • Write a few sentences that express the main idea of the article and the most important information. • Do not include details that are not important.

  12. Summary example • Ironman • Ironman is a movie about a rich man who becomes a superhero. In the movie, Tony Stark gets captured by terrorists. He meets a scientist who helps him build the ironman suit and escape to America. In America, Tony Stark becomes Ironman and fights bad guys.

  13. Homework 2 • After reading the article, visit the class discussion board. • Discussion topic 1 will open tonight. • Go to the discussion board and read the instructions. • You have 7 days to make your postings. • (03/15 – 03/21)

  14. Homework 3 ㅠㅠ • Audio Journal entry 2 (continued!) • What is something you USED to do when you were young, but don’t do anymore. Why don’t you do it anymore? • Record 1-2 minutes about this (before Tuesday!) • Note: DO NOT WRITE IT FIRST. Just talk.
