Courageous Conversations is utilizing the four agreements, six conditions, and compass in order to engage, sustain, and deepen INTRA-RACIAL, AND INTER-RACIAL DIALOGE ABOUT RACE, and is an essential foundation for examining and addressing institutionalized culture and structures that promote racial disparities. Relationships Collective Membership Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.   19. EMR – Establish 2 x 10 Positive Greetings & Farewells

Establish Relationships: Positive Greetings & Farewells • Incorporate positive greetings and farewells on a daily basis! • Positive greetings at the door using the student’s name provide an ongoing opportunity to personalize interactions with each student, to welcome them, and to demonstrate that you value their presence. • Positive farewells offering words of encouragement, saying thank you for participating, and wishing someone a good rest of the day convey caring and that the relationship is important to you. • NOTE: Be sure to recognize when students have been absent the previous day Borrowed with permission from EMR: Relationship-Based Tier 1 Strategy for Teachers

  21. 2 x 10 strategy • Helpful for students who may not yet have positive connection with teacher • Teacher spends 2 minutes per day for 10 consecutive days engaging student in a positive conversation • Conversation topics should be of interest to the student • Teacher maintains positive tone, avoids talking about any behaviors or academics of concern
