At least 50 years • A downtown Lansing fire station that has dispatched firefighters for at least 50 years would close this year under a tentative agreement between the city and union leaders. • Mayor Virg Bernero announced the planned closure Wednesday as part of an accord that would save the city an estimated $1.5 million by reducing daily minimum staffing levels from 51 to 48 and making unspecified changes to firefighters' health benefits.

  3. Union to vote • The International Association of Firefighters Local 421 is expected to vote on the deal by the end of next week. • Shuttering Fire Station No. 3, located near the corner of Hillsdale and South Pine streets and one of four stations citywide, would be instrumental to the staffing changes, city officials said. • Bernero and city officials are trying to address an approximately $12 million gap between revenues and expenses in his proposed $109.4 million general fund budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1

Response Time • Because of Fire Station No. 3's close proximity to other fire stations, officials say response times shouldn't change much for residents living in the area. • Bryan Epling, union president for the International Association of Firefighters Local 421, said response times should still be less than four minutes. • Fire Station No. 3 is within two miles of at least three other city fire stations - located at 629 N. Jenison Ave., 120 E. Shiawassee St. and 821 Todd Ave.
