What is the MEDAL project? • FDTL5 project • Stimulate learning & teaching developments in higher education • Encourage dissemination • Bidders asked to address priority areas for development identified by Subject Review process at generic or subject-specific level • ‘improving students’ academic literacy’ a HEFCE generic priority

  3. Who’s involved:The MEDAL Consortium • 5 universities- all with a designated Childhood Teacher AND a staff/educational developer • Northumbria and Roehampton • BA Joint Hons in (Early) Childhood Studies • Durham and York St John • English • York • BA in Education Studies

MEDAL’s original aims • Establish a pedagogic network of Childhood teachers • Develop a series of case studies/learning resources of effective practice targeted on supporting students’ academic literacy in CS • Staff/educational development targeted on supporting and raising awareness of interdisciplinary teachers across sector

  5. What is academic literacy? • What is it? Establishing a working definition • What does the term ‘literacy’ mean to you? • Is academic literacy different from other forms of literacy? • IT literacy • Emotional literacy

Implications of such diversity and multi-disciplinarity for definitions of academic literacy? • Hitherto, fdtl projects have focused on writing in the disciplines • Writing Pad in Art & Design • English & the Expanded Text • What does it mean to be academically literate in the context of Childhood Studies? • Staff perspectives • Student perspectives
