SESAME SESAMEComputing Updates for TAC+SACComputing GroupScientific Sector Salman Matalgah Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
SESAME Outline • Who we are! • Answers to SAC 2011. • Highlights of Computing achievements. • LinkSCEEM. • Control : • Concerns. • An issue with Linux distro (SL5.2). • No for the Convergence!! • Live Demonstration. • What we are working on now & challenges. Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
Who we are! Computing group is under the Scientific Sector • IT infrastructure and services: • Salman Matalgah: System & Network Admin. Group Leader • Mostafa Zoubi: System Eng. • We have an opening position for helpdesk engineer!!! • Scientific Computing: • LinkSCEEM project resources. • Now we are building capacity ( training ). • Collaborations with ESRF and other SR. • JUNET Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
Answers to SAC 2011 • Recommendation (A5): Development of a policy for establishing databases and document control systems for the floor layout, wire diagrams, labeling etc. Making this information available and accessible to SESAME staff. • Actions: • Intranet now is there with CMS ( see the demonstration ) • File server + web-based access (see the demonstration ) • Recommendation (B2): UO should consider establishing itself (collaboration with the IT group recommended). • Actions: • All users meeting applications/abstracts are logged in a DB ( on-line submission on SESAME web for 9th+10th ) • Sign up for SESAME mailing- list/newsletter has been created ( activation is pending) • we already got a quotation for an online apps which provide a customizable and maintainable contents/profiles, Voting and other facilities. • What next !! Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
Highlights of Computing Group achievements • Microsoft infrastructure project upgrade done on the new server Hardware. • Converging physical servers to VM virtualization • New Intranet for end users - CMS • New SESAME website launched ( Nov 2011) • Mailing list and apps DB. • New open source HR system - Orange HRM. • FTP server. • LinkSCEEMproject is on track. Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
LinkSCEEM • Project is on track, 2nd EC review Done. • SESAME is strategic partner as WP5 leader. • Many outreach activities done on HPC and SR. • SESAME held one big Open day @SESAME, 120+ participants. • Successful second SESAME-LinkSCEEMsummer school (SR+HPC). • SCORE program is started Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
Control Concernsfrom the Computing point of view. Control – old servers are treated as black boxes. Define backup scheme for the control setup. No hardware asset management system in SESAME. Linux distribution and putting a plan to upgrade the current distribution to a new one Code development and subversion. Network layout. Access and network security ( to define procedures ) Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
An issue with Linux distro (SL5.2) It’s is highly remarkable, as today we spent with this SL 5.2 release for more than three years and today there is SL 6.3 , we should re-think seriously of upgrading the control system Linux platform. SESAME-Linux platform should be reviewed taking into the consideration the points: Control system/others drivers and compatibility. Computing-Linux needs. Kick start mechanism and building the basics libraries for Epics control system To Build a concurrent control system for testing the new Linux release while the old release( production ) is there. This will figure out Linux distribution changes and the effects on the production setup. Development control consoles and servers. The life time of Linux release. SESAME End user Linux distribution Computing group need to work closely with control group to define and study the current case and the possibility of the upgrade also we need the control group to contribute by taking this decision after revising the work pending and the already done. Conclusion : we should have a global Linux plan for Control group needs and other SESAME group demands. Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
No for the Convergence between Computing and Control groups What is the advantage of Merging the Two groups ( Computing) and ( Control ) now ??? • There is no benefitfrom this convergence, the only reason to do this convergence is to facilitate the interfacing between the computing resources and network to the control which is not an issue now. From the computing group side the interfacing and the communication is in well defined shape with all other SESAME groups. • Form the Computing point of view the Control group is suffering from: • Shortage ofqualified man power. • Experience in control system project. • A plan or vision for the future needs of control. • Old control system done by Ahed & Saed ( Microtrone ) are treated as black boxes!!! • No documentation for the current control setup. • Weakness in Linux as supplementary knowledge and basic computer concepts. Conclusion: the merging between the computing and the control will not solve the above issues !!! Even it may complicate the problem and may raise extra obstacles . Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
Live Demonstrations • Intranet (Document Management and sharing) • Intranet.sesame.org.jo + web-FS • DB for users and events in SESAME website (it need more enhancements to meet specific needs) • e.g. DB For 10th user: • 10th user DB Salman Matalgah TAC/SAC 2012
What we are working on now & challenges. Licensing for software ( Matlab … ansys )+ middle-layer!! Network connectivity and cabinet for the booster is under the designing phase. Linux orientation for Staff . Automate the administration processes. On-line camera is there, but!! SESAME fiber internet connectivity finalization ( Zain, Orange Or JUNET). Pushing for Intranet and document management system ( + orientation for staff is required ) Website contents are needed. Commutation and Org. structure need to be more defined.
