Linguistics, Pronunciation and Phonics!!!!!!!! (and the villagers rejoice)
Linguistics, Pronunciation and Phonics is brought to you by T-Time English.
Goals! A brief intro to linguistics. Use linguistics to look at why certain problems occur and/or reoccur. Give examples of solutions to use in the classroom.
Intro to Linguistics (言語) • Scientific study of language. • It is a sub-discipline(学問分野の下位区分) of anthropology(人類学).
Parts of Linguistics • Phonetics (音声学) • Phonology (音韻論) • Morphology (形態論) • Syntax (統語論) • Semantics(意味論) • Many other insignificant yet wildly fascinating subsections exist, however, we have neither the time nor the desire to waste any of our precious 70 minutes on them.
Phonetics and Phonology (No, not fun-ology) • Phonetics: Study of how speech sounds are made. • Phonology: The organization of language sounds.
Morphology and Syntax • Morphology: Study of the structure of words. • Syntax: Study of how words combine to make grammatical phrases and sentences. ex. Why what we wrote above makes any sense to anyone…
Semantics • Semantics: This is the study of the meaning of words. (Don’t worry. There is no meaning behind putting this topic on a slide of its own.) Bad joke time: Which came first- semantics or its meaning?
PhonicsフォニックスFuonikkusu A-E-I-O-U vs. あ・い・う・え・お t-o vs. と E-n-g-l-i-s-h vs. に・ほ・ん・ご
Possible solutions Pronunciation with Talia Phonics with Ted
Pronunciation • Mirror exercise. • Silent word game. • Mouth diagrams. (That’s right. She’s going to draw in your mouth. So stick out your tongue.) • Gestures. • Letter trees. (If you plant Alphabits, they will grow into a tree of that letter.)
Phonics Bb, Cc, Dd, Gg, Pp, Tt, Vv, Zz Ff, Ll, Mm, Nn, Ss, Xx Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo, Uu Hh, Jj, Kk, Qq, Rr, Ww, Yy
休憩Time!!! • “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” -Benjamin Franklin
Morphology and SyntaxAm you likes a dogs? • I am like baseball. • I have a brothers. • Do she likes apples? • Because it’s fun. • I want be a teacher. • Next I say him singer favorite. • “What’s a verb?”… 動詞だよ。…動詞って何? • Baseball makes me hard.
Tackling the problems (not the students) • Involve the students in theirlearning. • Correct the problems at the start. • English and Japanese are not compatible languages. • Become your own student. • Get creative- whether it’s phonics or grammar.
We’re not gods so… • Now it’s your turn. • See if you can use some of our examples and ideas to satisfy the grammar nazi and child within you all at once. • We’re sorry you don’t have a lot of time but the one true god, Zane, only gave us 70 minutes. (We’re sorry Allah, God, Shiva, YHVH, and Jebus. Don’t strike us down.)
Your missionThis slide will self-destruct in 30 seconds. Ex: Because it’s fun. • I have a brothers. • This is the my book. • She study to be a doctor. • I am like baseball. • I can English. • This is the by Ken broken window.
