Tonight’s question • If you’re creating a news script and your reporter isn’t shown on screen but he or she is narrating, what direction would include on your video column: SOT, OC or VO? • Answer in the top post’s comments section on www.cmat131.wordpress.com

One change • As you can see from the website, I’m reducing the screenplay to 20 pages. Why? • I do like you guys. Seriously. • But also, this assignment can only be worth 100 points, according to the syllabus. And 40 pages is way too much effort for that amount of points. • Yes, you’re the victims of a work-in-progress, but you already knew that.
Now let’s hear from the rest • We didn’t get to everyone Tuesday. Let’s hear their treatments and offer constructive criticism.
Formatting your script • For this 2-page assignment, I left it up to you whether to outline your cast and sets, as on page 411 of Hilliard. • It’s mandatory for the 20-page paper. • For all other formatting questions, refer to the Cosby Show script that begins on page 411 and to my PowerPoint from last Thursday.
Now that it’s 20 pages... • ...Your sitcom will run about 11-12 minutes. • If you’re exhaling, wait just a second. This just means your writing will have to be even more condensed, and every word will have to bear twice the weight. Fluff and wrong turns will hurt you more. • A standard sitcom has 28 scenes. You should have about 14.
It’s about time • Scenes are typically 1-3 minutes long in a sitcom (roughly 65-170 words of dialogue, not including scene directions). • Since we’re cutting things in half, your Act I should be about 4-5 minutes. Or 2-4 scenes. • Act II is also 4-5 minutes. Or 2-4 scenes. • Deviating slightly from the Cosby script, you should have a 1-2 minute conclusion at the end.
Making your script zing • Each act should end with a cliffhanger. • A cliffhanger is some kind of action or dialogue that ends before we’re given its conclusion, leaving us “hanging,” so to speak.
Humor • The humor arises from the situation. Let’s look at the middle of 410 for an explanation. • That said, not all of you are naturally funny. Nor will you be. • Don’t worry. You’re not being graded on whether you make me laugh. Do your best with the humor and concentrate on fashioning a tight plot, strong characters and establishing a good flow of action.
