  5. Why Should We Set Goals? • “What is worth doing is worth doing well.”

  6. Jamal’s Goals • Read more books • Take good notes • Listen better in math class • Participate in class discussions • Study more carefully for tests and quizzes

  7. Helpful Hints for Setting Solid Goals • Be specific • Write it down • Choose difficult yet achievable goals • Set a realistic deadline • Check your progress regularly Can you think of any other helpful hints?

  8. Jamal’s New and Improved Goal GOAL: I want to improve my reading comprehension skills by increasing the amount of books I read. I will read three books each month. ACTION STEPS: • I will go to the school library to find good books • I will choose a book in my Lexile range • I will set aside 30 minutes four times a week (Sunday and three weeknights) to read for fun • I will find magazines or internet sites which interest me • I will not watch TV, play video games, IM, or talk on the phone from 6:30-8:30 each night (so I can get my work done and have time to read)
