The story of Abraham • Abram lived long ago in the land of Canaan and one day the Lord came to Abram and said, • “Abram, get out of your country, and out of your father's house, and go to the land that I will show you.” • The Lord promised him, • “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you will be a blessing.”
So Abram packed up all of his belongings; took Sarai, his wife; Lot, his brother's son; all of his servants and all of his cattle and left for a new land. Abraham and his family travelled a long way passing through towns and villages. When they reached the plane of Moreh the Lord appeared to Abram again and said, “I will give this land to your children.”
And Abram said, • " Lord God, what will You give me? • I am childless..." • And the Lord said, • "Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars; if you able to number them: so your seed will be." • Abram didn’t really know what the Lord meant because he had no children of his own, but he trusted the Lord and praised him that day. • Abram believed the Lord; and the Lord counted it to him for righteousness.
Now, Sarai Abram's wife did not have any children. So Sarai suggested Hagar, her maid, to be an Abram’s wife and give him a child. But as soon as Hagar became a wife, she did not respect Sarai anymore.
Sarai got upset with Hagar, because Hagar was disobeying her and would not do the things she asked her to do, and Hagar ran away into the desert. • The angel of the Lord found Hagar next to the fountain of water. • The angel said, “Hagar, Sarai's maid, where are you going?” • “I ran away from Sarai.” • “Return to Sarai, and obey her. You will have a son, his name will be Ishmael!”
