Egg FloatBy Astrid and Nate How much salt do you need in water to make an egg float?
Background Information • If you put an egg in freshwater, it will sink because the density of the freshwater is lower than that of the egg. • Add enough salt and the water’s density will be higher than that of the egg, causing the egg to float.
Materials(List) • Eggs (5) • Sharpie • Table Salt • Water • Measuring Cup • Large Watertight Container • Spoon (To Stir Water) • Clear Cups (16 oz.) • Soup Spoon • Lab notebook
Hypothesis • If you put an egg in freshwater it will sink then if you add salt into the water, the egg will float.
Procedure • Take out 5 eggs, label them 1-5 • In each cup, add a pinch more salt than the last cup had • Add water to each cup, and stir to let the salt dissolve • Pour 3 cups of water into your large container • Add one cup of salt to the large container • Make a two-fold serial dilution of the stock solution • Test an egg in each solution to see if it will float • Repeat steps 5-6 with the four other eggs • When you are done, wash your hands and record your data and conclusion in your science notebook
