Weekly Schedule Monday: • Assignment list handed out • All learning Targets for the week • All vocabulary assignments • Map for map quiz • Any Projects • All reading assignments with due dates • Vocabulary from previous week due • Map Quiz from previous week • New material work/discussion • Usually a reading assignment due

Weekly Schedule Tuesday • College Style Lecture over historical connections • Cornell Notes • Include summary of notes usually done on students’ time • Required for binder checks ( 1 per unit) Wednesday • Reading Quiz • Pages indicated on assignment sheet • Open note • Quiz will come from “big idea” questions listed on warm up sheet Thursday-Friday • In depth engagement of class concepts

Why is there so much work? • Purpose of class is to introduce a rigorous, college style curriculum • Success in class requires mastery of • Large quantity of vocabulary that students are not previously familiar with • Application of concepts to real world scenarios • Historical situations that exhibit key cultural geographic concepts • “Flipped” classroom • In most classes, homework is practice for concepts learned in class • This style allows basic concepts (vocabulary) to be learned at home so the application of complex concepts can be applied in class • Vocabulary memorization requires time, not brainpower

Mr. Jentsch’s suggested HW schedule Students have 7 days to complete assignments Most students either do all work on Monday, then forget it OR leave it all until the weekend, then cram it in and stress out Both of these strategies will get the student completion points, but will not lead to success in class My suggestion has students working for 10-30 minutes a night and will result in better mastery of material

Mr. Jentsch’s suggested HW schedule Monday • Make vocab cards for 7-10 words learned in class • Set them aside • Do a self quiz on the Map, identify the countries you don’t know (fill it in) • 2-3 times during the night (before dinner, before bed) use vocab cards to quiz yourself until you know those terms Approximate total time: 10 minutes Student may decide to begin/complete reading depending on week schedule

  12. Mr. Jentsch’s suggested HW schedule Tuesday • Read through and summarize lecture notes in notebook • Complete any vocabulary cards learned that day (usually 2-5) • Do reading with notes if not previously completed • Study new vocab cards 2-3x Approximate time: 30 minutes

  13. Mr. Jentsch’s suggested HW schedule Wednesday • Make vocab cards for 7-10 words learned in class • Review Mon & Tues vocab cards • Break up map into 3-4 sections with 3-4 countries in each. Begin at one side of map (north or east) and memorize 1 group • Review new words 2-3 times Approximate time 10 minutes

Begin at one side of map (north or east) and memorize 2nd group • Do any additional reading to get vocabulary and examples • Make vocab cards for any words learned in class or reading and review 2-3 x later that night Approximate time 20 minutes
