  1. Plants & Animals Unit 8: Patterns of Behavior

  2. Plant Behavior • Phototropism • Gravitropism • Thigmotropism • Hydrotropism • Chemotropism Northern Pitcher Plant Sarraceniapurpurea “carnivorous” Plant Physiology Video

  3. Phototropism • The growth of organisms in response to light • Auxin (chemical) • found in cells farthest from light source • released to increase growth • Positive – ? • Negative – ?

  4. Gravitropism • Turning or growth movement in response to gravity • AKA: Geotropism • Charles Darwin was one of the first to document this phenomenon • Positive – ? • Negative – ?

  5. Thigmotropism • Movement or growth in response to touch / contact • Auxin • What type of plants can you think of use thigmotropism? Mimosa pudica- Video Have you ever seen a plant play dead? Or move when tickled?

  6. Hydrotropism • Growth determined by gradient in water concentration

  7. Chemotropism • Growth in response to chemicals • Pollen tube grows towards ovule • Flower into Fruit Video: reproduction pollen grains

  8. Summary in Song – Mr. Parr

  9. Animal Behavior • Animals with traitsthat give them a competitive advantage are more likely to reproduce and pass on those genesto future generations!!!!! NATURAL SELECTION

  10. Innate Behavior TURTLES TO WATER • Specific set of actions carried out in the same sequence each time • Based on genes • Even w/o stimulus – animal will still complete the behavior KANGAROO TO POUCH

  11. T-P-S: Contrast learned behavior to innate behavior. Give examples.

  12. Learned Behavior • Habituation • Classical Conditioning • Operant Conditioning • Imprinting • Cognitive Behavior

  13. Habituation • Lack of response after repeated exposure to stimulus • No positive or negative effects • Examples???

  14. Classical Conditioning • Learning to associate two different kinds of stimuli • Pavlov’s Dog Video: Attack of the Quack

  15. Operant Conditioning • Learning to associate a response to a stimulus • Positive / Negative Reinforcement Video: Big Bang Theory Sheldon trains Penny

  16. Imprinting • Learning w/in a specific time period • Permanent • Baby Ducks follow mom b/c 1st thing they see Video: Imprinting – Tom & Jerry

  17. Cognitive Behavior • Thinking, reasoning, & processing info • Used to: • Understand complex concepts • Solve problems

  18. Animals & Stimuli • How do you respond to internal stimuli? • How do you respond to external stimuli?

  19. Types of Behaviors • Competitive • Agonistic • Dominance • Territorial • Communication • Body / Sound / Smell • Pheromones • Language • Courting / Nurturing • Cooperative • Altruistic behavior Bower Bird Nest

  20. SQPL • Social behavior is more important than individual behavior to insure the survival of the species.

  21. What is social living? • Working with your partner – create a concept map to cite the advantages and disadvantages of social living. • Include examples!

  22. Gilligan’s Island • OBJECTIVES: • What does it take for an organism to survive? • What sorts of things affect how an organism survives? • How do different kinds of organisms solve these same problems? Video: Theme Music

  23. TV Shows / Movies…. • What TV shows or movies have you seen on this topic? • Which aspects were realistic? • Which aspects were not?

  24. Group Work • Create a list of the kinds of problems that you would have to solve if you were shipwrecked on an island for three months. • What would you need to do? • What kinds of problems would you face if they were to survive?

  25. Do other organisms have the same problems to solve?
