Early Life • Born on August 26th, 1910 but considered her birthday the 27th because that is when she was Baptized • Born in Skopje, Macedonia • As a child she was fascinated by stories of missionaries • At the young age of twelve she decided to dedicate herself to a religious life and to spread the word of God

  3. Ireland • Once Agnes turned eighteen she left home for the Loreto Convet in Rathfarnam, Ireland • It was here in Ireland that she received the name Teresa, after her patroness, St. Terese of Lisieux

  4. India • After spending a year in Ireland Teresa was sent to join the Loreto Convent in Darjeeling, India • While in India Teresa took her vows as a nun on May 24th, 1931 • From this point on she would be referred to as Mother Teresa • After becoming a nun Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta, India for seventeen years

Early Missions • In 1946 Mother Teresa boarded a train headed to Darjeeling from Calcutta • It was on this train while looking at the slums of India is when Mother Teresa received her “call from God” • It was at that moment when she decided she would dedicate her life to helping the sick and the poor • Mother Teresa’s first “mission” was to create what she called an “open-air” school for the children of Calcutta

  6. Image of Service • It was when Mother Teresa opened her school in Calcutta she traded in her Loreto Convent habit for a more simplistic white “sari” that was decorated with a small blue border

  7. The Order of the Missionaries of Charity • After working to build up the slums of India Mother Teresa received permission to start her own order • In 1950 she founded the Order of the Missionaries of Charity • The Order started with only thirteen members in Calcutta and now is a worldwide organization with over 10,000 members and operating over 650 missions in 125 countries around the world • Her Order still operates today around the world helping anyone in need

Awards and Honors • In 1971 Mother Teresa received the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize for her Order’s work around the world • In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize • In 1980 she received India highest honor the “Bharat Ratna” • In 1985 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Reagan • She received her greatest honor six years after her death in 1997 when she was first recognized as a saint on October 19th, 2003 by Pope John Paul II who was good friends with Mother Teresa

  9. Lifetime of Service • Mother Teresa lead the Order of the Missionaries of Charity up until she died from heart failure on September 5th, 1997 • At that point the Order of the Missionaries of Charity was operating around the world helping thousands of people in need

  10. Service • Mother Teresa and her work relate to the classroom through service • We always hear about service and are encouraged to participate in any kind of service as a part of Bishop Ahr • Mother Teresa was all about service and still is because all of her missions are still active and serving people around the world
