Follow the Dream: The Story of Christopher Columbus Students will analyze, interpret, and understand the role Christopher Columbus played in discovering the New World and what that meant for the future. Christopher Columbus, a young Spaniard, grew up wanting to find a new route to the Orient for trading purposes. He faced many obstacles but never gave up on his dream.   2. What was Columbus’s Journey like? • Activity • You are Christopher Columbus. What was it like sailing the seas for 71 days? How did it feel when you made it to land? What was life where you landed? Write journal entry detailing these events.

  3. What is the difference between the “New” and “Old” World? • Activity • Observe and look at the two maps. The first one is of the “old world” aka the world as it was viewed before Columbus discovered the Americas. The second map is the map we use today. • Using a double sided journal format, compare and contrast three major differences of the new and old world.

  4. What is special about the “New World”? • Activity • You’re a “big-shot” in the world of advertising and marketing. You need to convince the King and Queen of Spain that the New World is a great investment. In your group you will create a brochure advertising the New World.

  5. Standards • Standard 4-1: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the exploration of the New World. • Indicator 4-1.2 Summarize the motivation and accomplishments of the Vikings and the Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French explorers including Leif Eriksson, Christopher Columbus, Hernando de Soto, Ferdinand Magellan, Henry Hudson, John Cabot, and Robert LaSalle.
