  1. The following are examples of votes in 5 constituencies, and in no way meant to be realistic! Each time a %number is in bold, it indicates that an MP is awarded to that party, and 33% points are then deducted from that figure ...if sufficient votes remain they may also gain the next MP awarded...if not, remaining votes go to the ‘nation- wideMPs pool’. For simplicity, in examples, there are 100,000 votes cast in each constituency. Unused votes are noted, but not used in calculations. 3x 33% shares =99%, so 1% of vote will carry over to the ‘pool’. Votes needed for automatic MP= 33%=33,000 Minimum vote required for MP =15%=15,000 Votes <15% ..<15,000 go to national ‘pool automatically . Votes over may also..

  2. eg 1 Votes cast: 16,000 Tory 3,000 Lab 3,000 Lib 78,000 Green To NMP pool: Tory 16,ooo16,ooo16,ooo Lab Lib Green 78,ooo d 45,oood • (-17,ooo) • 3,ooo • 3,ooo • 3,ooo • 3,ooo • 12,ooo • 12,ooo • (-16,ooo) Constituency MPs = 2 Green, 1Tory (- 3,ooo) 16,ooo eg 2 Votes cast: 50,000 Tory 30,000 Lab 16,000 Lib 4,000 Green To NMP pool: vote for seat 1 .. for seat2 ..for seat3 Tory 50,ooo d 17,ooo 17,ooo • Lab 30,ooo 30,oood Lib 16,ooo 16,ooo • Green 4,ooo4,ooo Constituency MPs = 2 Tory, 1 Lab

  3. eg3 Votes cast: 6,000 Tory 70,000 Lab 19,000 Lib 5,000 Green Tory 6,ooo Lab 70,ooo d 37,ooo d Lib 19,ooo19,ooo19,ooo Green 5,ooo 2,ooo -3,ooo 4,ooo (-4,ooo) (-14,ooo) 6,ooo Constituency MPs = 1 Green, 1 Lib, 1 Lab Constituency MPs = 2 Lab, 1 Lib eg 4 Votes cast: 6,000 Tory 30,000 Lab 29,000 Lib 35,000 Green Green 35,ooo d Lab 30,ooo 30,oood • Lib 29,ooo 29,ooo29,ooo Tory

  4. eg 5 Votes cast: 1,000 Tory 75,000 Lab 12,000 Lib 12,000 Green Lab 75,ooo d 42,ooo d Tory 1,ooo Lib12,ooo Green 12,ooo 9,ooo Constituency MPs = 2 Lab only If there were only these 5 constituencies (for simplicity of example), the total MP number would be 15. 14 constituency MPs have been elected: TORY 3 LAB 6 LIB 2 GREEN 3 There will therefore be 1 ‘Nationwide’ MP...So we look at the remaining votes in the ‘balancing pool’: Tory votes : +13,ooo, -33,ooo totals -20k Lab votes: +16,ooo -6,ooo +10k Lib votes: +31,ooo -18,000 +13k Green votes: +35,000 +35k THEREFORE GREEN PARTY WINS THE ‘NATIONWIDE MP’....
