  2. Emergence of event-history surveys in Estonia: some background • Survey statistics seriously underdeveloped, compared to census and vital registration: - local capacity limited to implementation - absence of sampling frame and procedures for nationally representative surveys - absence of professional interviewer network - absence of appropriate funding-schemes • Discussions and decisions among Baltic statisticians, research community and international organisations: - plan for a series of nationally representative surveys, covering major areas of population and societal development - inclusion of methodologically advanced event-history surveys in the national system of survey statistics

  3. Family and Fertility Survey: the start of EHSs in Estonia • European FFS (1st round 1988-2000, 2nd round/GGP 2001-2008) • - initiative from national population institutes, mandate from • intergovernmental population conferences (Budapest, Geneva) • - coordination by United Nations Economic Commision for Europe • and FFS international working group (IWG) • - major life careers in comparative cross-national perspective (24 countries) • - rich basis for demographic and social research (internationally close to one hundred projects underway/completed) • knowledge base for policy formulation • Estonian FFS • national survey in the framework of European FFS • data collection in 1994 (second round 2004-2005) • country-specific features (prolonged cohort range, coverage of both • native- and foreign-origin populations) • contribution to the methodology of survey statistics in the country • system of outputs (methodological reports, statistical tabulations, • country report in UN series, analytical monograph, research papers)

  4. Related surveys applying event-history methodology • labour force survey • national minority survey • FFS male survey • health interview survey Coordination between working groups in terms of • sampling (sampling frame, target population, procedures) • questionnaire design (modules on main life careers) • definitions of main events and characteristics • implementation of the survey (interviewer training, data collection, coding etc)

  5. Harmonised modules implemented in EH surveys

  6. Some comparisons across surveys: partnerships

  7. Some comparisons across surveys: children

  8. Some comparisons across surveys: induced abortions

  9. Some comparisons across surveys: usual language

  10. Some comparisons across surveys: employment

  11. Some comparisons across surveys: locus of control
